Rock Hard
Beastie Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're we're we're
We're the b-boys, we don't regret
There's nothing wrong with your TV set
We're a gettin loose
We couldn't be harder
Our beats are bigger and better and longer
Got real rock shit
You must admit
Not fake, not false, not counterfit
I can play the drums, I can play gituar
Not just b-boys, but real rock stars
Rock, rock, rock...

When we borrow your shit, you better hit the deck
You'll walk the plank for your dis
Respect, respect, respect...
If you front on the Rock, best run and hide
If you got static, we'll take it outside
And you start to get dulled by the Beastie Boys
Use real rock beats, show off big toys
Like claps of thunder from the cumulus clouds
So we'll pump up the beat and make it real loud
Loud...
A, then scrach it...

Heavy metal tension running through your blood
Too much rock step off the pud
Too much treble mid-range and bass
The beat's so hard it'll dick your face
You'll crush out hard rock hard beats
Hard rock cold rythms for fanitic freaks
Some people say this has been done
We're here, we're now
And the battles won

Fists...
Fists of fury in an MC bout
Rock so hard it'll knock you out
The very first blow is a kick in the snout
The beat's so def that you better beware
When you're talkin' bass right in your face
The walls crumble down, destroying the place
The finishing touch is the bokasat-slam
The final blow is the five finger jam

Some...
Sometimes I write rythms rather write rhymes
He writes his and I write mine
Rock 'n roll rythms are raunchy and rawkus
We're from Manhatten, you're from Secaucus
Mike D AdRock and MCA
Not before long I can hear you say
In a way these boys got juice
They're goin' off you know they love to get loose
Get loose, get loose...
Poose
Gettin' the Ad Ad AdRock

MCA, Mike D. in the place to be
The Beastie Boys showin' up in toy
That's right
Uh, Uh
In the place to be
You know it, you know it
AdRock, uh uh
When the party gets loose
Slop one, slop one
And your goin' the boots

Everybody gettin' trouble
LOV on the New York C.
Double R double R
Better off the by
Just takin' off the jile
Like I lost my style
Gonna' grab my rhyme
All the nigros the got style
Oh...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beastie Boys's song, "Rock Hard," are about the band's prowess as rock stars and their ability to dominate the music scene. The opening lines, "We're the b-boys, we don't regret, there's nothing wrong with your TV set," boast the band's confidence and successful infiltration into mainstream media. They then declare their musical abilities and assert their authenticity as "real rock stars" who can play instruments like drums and guitar. The song's chorus, "Rock, rock, rock..." reaffirms their status as rock stars and purveyors of real rock music.

The following verses exude a macho and aggressive attitude, as the members warn others to show respect and not front on their rock music. They emphasize the power and intensity of their beats, using metaphors like "claps of thunder from the cumulus clouds" and "too much rock step off the pud." The final verse highlights the collaborations between the members in composing their music, while casual name-dropping emphasizes their spontaneity and fun-loving nature. Overall, the lyrics of "Rock Hard" showcase the Beastie Boys' unapologetic and in-your-face approach to rock music.

How can anyone not like the beastie boys

Fred Garvin

@Grater Deddly You gotta listen to Paul's Boutique from beginning to end. Hey Ladies is the LOW POINT of the album imo! Not many groups have a masterpiece in their catalog, but Paul's Boutique is one.

Grater Deddly

@The Willemsens That's entirely fair -- I don't think I've listened to the Beasties since around Paul's Boutique, I still like "Hey, Ladies", but again, it's not head and shoulders above anything else that was out at the time. They may well have advanced since then. They don't seem to be just "grab what you can while you can" kind of guys, so I can believe it. I'll have to look over some of their more recent work.

The thing about rap/hip hop for which it deserves credit is it's lack of boundaries -- you can rap over anything, or nothing. It certainly allows for all kinds of exploration of musical forms, though I'll admit one thing that turned me off in the 1990s at some point was this penchant for bands to say "let's throw in a rap section, that'll be cool and the kids will love it." The Pet Shop Boys did that, Bernard Sumner too, others. Bad idea. Nu Metal was not as bad as some folks claim, but it was not a Metal sub-genre I'd recommend.

Anyway, it may be like listening to David Bowie after his first two albums and claiming he's lousy and never hearing later works -- to pick one guy who did lots of different things. The BBs could very well have followed that path, I'll have to check and see.

The Willemsens

@Grater Deddly  @Grater Deddly  your points are valid, and I too am old enough to know the entire arc of the Beastie Boys musical life. The way I see it, what you're saying about them applies mostly to their early works... to which I agree their talent was clearly more limited. But as they progressed, they started to learn how to play different instruments and the evolution is apparent. They really started to hit their stride when they began working with Mario Caldato. Many in the industry consider Pauls Boutique the magnum opus of sampling. But to me, they were at their best in Check Your Head when they fused Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop & a minimal amount of punk/rock seamlessly. I saw them live twice on that tour and was blown away by their instrumental breaks. Anyways, the only point I'm trying to make is that they became quite talented as musicians and refined their MC skills greatly as their career progressed. Everyone has a limit on their talent, but they became a lot more than 3 guys dependent on samples.

Grater Deddly

@The Willemsens Some things are a matter of taste, subjective, and others have an objective component to them -- e.g. J.S. Bach is more talented and made better music than Sid Vicious. With the Beasties, I am old enough to remember them when they first came out and toured with Madonna -- though not their very beginnings as a punk band. Ric Rubin pushed them, and was smart enough to be the first (that I can think of) to meld Heavy Metal with a rap song -- ("Right to Party"). I even bought the album -- I still like some of the songs, but somewhere along the line I realized that rap is the cut rate junk food of music. It's not the Oreos, it's the fake Oreos that you buy when you can't afford the real kind.

A song like "Sabotage" is a good example, it's got a great build up, lots of things going on, and then just never quite gets there -- I keep waiting for a chorus that never comes. I still like the tune, but my only point, which I did have, is that the Beasties are highly overrated. People seem to think of them as the white guys who can legitimately do rap, and they are as good as anybody -- but that isn't saying much. Race has nothing to do with it -- and for me, hip hop crested with Blowfly and Rapp Dirty.

The Willemsens

@Grater Deddly I'm not sure you know what you're talking about or you're just trolling. You are obviously welcome to your opinion but they are way more talented musicians & DJs then you're giving them credit for and/or casual listeners even realize.

I found this 12" at a cut-outs only record store that used to be on Belmont here in Chicago in 1999, for $10.99. The serial number on the label is DJ002, in other words the second record officially released on Def Jam ever after LL's I Need A Beat. Piece of history here if you have it.
