Good Luck
Broken Bells Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, the face
The face of evil is on the news tonight
We see the darkness over light
But have we ever really lived in better times?
Hey, strange, they say we're coming to the end of the line
But is there still a chance to change your mind?
Or have all the colors turned to black and white?

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I had another dream, I had another life
No one saw the blood on my hands
When I woke, I was there alone
Where will it end?
After the twilight, always a sunrise
But the blood of morning comes when small arms fire
Ignore the deadline, there's no divine right
Enter the gods and all the sacred signs
At the end of your line

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Good luck, my friend
In time it ends
Heads up, dead land
My heart your hands
Good luck, my friend
In time it ends
Heads up, dead land
My heart, your hands

Overall Meaning

The Broken Bells song "Good Luck" raises the issue of the current state of society and puts forth the idea that we might be living in some of the darkest times of our existence. The song highlights the face of evil as it appears on the news and the darkness that overshadows the light in our world. The lyrics suggest that it is questionable whether we have ever really lived in better times. The song poses a question of hope; can we still change things for the better, or are we doomed to watch as all the colors turn to black and white?

The lyrics of the song are also introspective, as the singer describes having another dream and another life, from which they woke up with blood on their hands. The questioning takes on a more personal note; where will it end? And they speculate that there is always a sunrise after the twilight but the blood of morning comes with small arms fire. The song ends with the singer wishing the listeners good luck in facing the darkness that surrounds us.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the status of the world today and challenges us to ponder on the choices that we have made and are making. The lyrics suggest that there is hope for change, but we need to take action if we want to see a brighter future.

Line by Line Meaning

This line expresses recognition of something specific; it could be a person or an event that the singer is familiar with.

The face of evil is on the news tonight
The singer is referring to an evil event that's happening in the world, and is actively observing it on the news.

We see the darkness over light
The singer is expressing that the bad things in the world are being emphasized more than the good, which could be interpreted as an unfortunate reality of the lives we lead.

But have we ever really lived in better times?
This line is a rhetorical question that makes the reader consider the possibility that the world has always been somewhat dark and bad news is not a new occurrence. It's also a commentary on how good the current times could really be.

Hey, strange, they say we're coming to the end of the line
This line could be interpreted either as change is constant or the world as we know it is approaching its end. The line references a common expression that deals with the end of a streak or period of positivity.

But is there still a chance to change your mind?
This line is a call to action, and suggests that even though situations arise where things seem hopeless, people can still make changes to improve circumstances.

Or have all the colors turned to black and white?
The singer is observing what he/she perceives to be a monochromatic reality, where they only see bad and have lost sight of the good. They’re questioning the credibility of the information being presented to them on news and social media.

I had another dream, I had another life
This line suggests that the artist’s current reality is not their only one, and that they imagine different scenarios where their life could be different from what it is now.

No one saw the blood on my hands
This line expresses a sense of guilt or bewilderment and the possibility that the events we think are a certain way might be viewed differently by others which questions our reality.

When I woke, I was there alone
This line symbolizes the possibility that the artist woke up to a reality where they internalized their issues and didn’t have any support or help from others. It could also symbolize a feeling of being disconnected from those around them.

Where will it end?
This line is a question about the journey of life; what path will the singer's life take? What place do we go after we die, and how do we achieve our dreams?

After the twilight, always a sunrise
This line suggests that after the darkness always comes the light, and that a new day is guaranteed to come regardless of how bad the previous day was. The artist is offering a word of hope!

But the blood of morning comes when small arms fire
The singer is pointing out that every new day comes at a price, and it may involve hurt, injustice or sacrifice. Bad things may happen after dawn but the fact that the sun rises should still give hope.

Ignore the deadline, there's no divine right
This line suggests that there are many paths to take in life, and that what we see as the end isn't always so. You shouldn’t worry too much about things that are out of your control, and life can often be surprising.

Enter the gods and all the sacred signs
This line employs a religious or spiritual connotation where the singer believes that there is a higher power guiding his/her journey or protecting them.

At the end of your line
This line is a reference to the end of life and how one perceives their life at that point. It could be reasoned that each of us has to take complete ownership of our lives until its very end.

Good luck, my friend
The phrase “good luck” is a way of expressing well-wishes. Here the artist is urging their friend(s) to keep going and keep their heads up no matter what happens.

In time it ends
This line suggests that every situation has a conclusion, and that we should be patient and wait until things take their natural course according to time itself.

Heads up, dead land
The phrase “heads up” is an indicator to be aware of troubles and to watch for warning signs. The phrase “dead land” suggests a place or a period of time that is not fruitful or is confronting difficulty.

My heart your hands
The phrase “my heart, your hands” is an emotive expression of vulnerability or trust. It suggests that the person speaking is wholly dependent on the person being spoken to, which demonstrates the strength in accepting help from others at times.

This song is oddly hopeful. The second verse hit me hard...

"I had another dream, I had another life
No one saw the blood on my hands
When I woke, I was there alone
Where will it end?
After the twilight, always a sunrise
But the blood of morning comes when small arms fire
Ignore the deadline, there's no divine right
Enter the gods and all the sacred signs
At the end of your line"

I started my life over again in 2020, and now....this song made me realize after the rebuild...I finally feel alive again.

Thanks guys, your music means a lot.

Good luck

Hand tied
It ends
Hand tied
Dead lamb
My heart
Your hands

Alone into the bright of the night I see the light
and float like a kite on the wind
Above the sin they claim I have done
again and again
I would do for you as you have done for me
My friend, My friends
Good luck
again and again
We are so lucky
Together we go
into the bright of the night ;p

@JennVix

It is brilliant!

@jonathanomarin

I had the same thoughts too. Ethereal and melancholic are the best words I can use to describe this. It’s beautiful.

@khanahaipoty Your comment makes you somewhat pathetic. Feel free to present the music you have created so I can compare. I suspect there is little joy in your life and therefore will assume it will show in your artistic endeavours. Carry on.

I dont get how songs and videos like this only get 200k views and modern day repetitive autotune pop gets millions - makes me sad sometimes. But glad to see there are people out there that appreciate music as good as this

@michaelcunningham8273

There's another video that has 6 million views that's why!

@R__A

Luckily it had 51 million streams on spotify to make up for it lol. But you’re right, the video deserves more views

@MfConnor
