Desire

It's all gone now
A touch of your hand
It's all gone now
I wasn't playing with no hearts
But I knew we'd fall apart
Too late to realise
Those were the best days of my life
When the whole world is on fire
Death and desire
Surrounding me now
There ain't no other way
But loving the flames
Burning me now
Pain inside
It's all gone now
No emotions to hide
It's all gone now
Like the birds of paradise
Flying high across the sky
And that's where I belong
When our time is gone
When the whole world is on fire
Death and desire
Surrounding me now
There ain't no other way
But loving the flames
Burning me now
When the whole world is on fire
Death and desire
Surrounding me now
There ain't no other way
But loving the flames
Burning me now
When the whole world is on fire
Death and desire
Burning me now
Death and desire
Burning me now
Surrounding me now
The lyrics of 69's song "Desire" convey a sense of longing and reflection on past experiences. The opening lines "Footprints in the sand, it's all gone now, a touch of your hand, it's all gone now" suggest that something meaningful and significant has come to an end. There is a feeling of nostalgia and loss as the singer realizes that they didn't fully appreciate the moments that have now passed.
The following lines express a sense of regret and missed opportunities: "I wasn't playing with no hearts, but I knew we'd fall apart, too late to realize, those were the best days of my life." It seems that the singer had some awareness of the eventual outcome, but perhaps didn't fully understand the value of what they had until it was gone. There is a lamentation for the loss of those moments and an acknowledgment that they were indeed the best days of their life.
The chorus of the song focuses on the theme of struggle and embracing both death and desire. The lines "When the whole world is on fire, death and desire, surrounding me now, there ain't no other way, but loving the flames, burning me now" suggest a willingness to face the trials and challenges of life. There is an acceptance of the intensity of passion and the consequences that come with it. The singer seems to understand that in order to truly experience and live, they must embrace both the joys and the pain that comes with such desires.
Overall, "Desire" explores themes of longing, regret, and the acceptance of both the joys and the hardships that come with pursuing one's desires.

I ran a label called Infonet Electronic Recordings and had met Carl through another Detroit producer called MK or Marc Kinchen. Marc had told me about this amazing young kid in Detroit making music so out there he was in a league of his own. In those days you had the fax machine or you wrote or you telephoned. So I think I called him and introduced myself and asked if he had any tracks I could listen too. A week or two later I received a mailer with six white labels of the most incredible music I had ever heard. I sat with the lads from Bandulu and we listened to the records non stop. This had such a resonance, power and a beauty that I licensed it for a compilation called 313 Detroit. It is still as powerful nearly a quarter century later as it was the first time I played it.
