We organised an all nighter in a one room scout hall in Uddingston in Glasgow in 1993, and about 4 in the morning Evil Eddie Richards turned up with Richie Hawtin in tow, after they'd played at a Slam gig in town. Eddie was a friend of ours as we'd put him on at several of our all-nighters so he knew Richie would be into it.
I was on the decks as they walked in, and I could see them standing inside the door, just as I started a mix I'd been working on. Normally I'd have shit myself and fucked it up, but 2 E's does wonders for your self confidence!
The mix was a belter (it was Johnny Dangerous "Problem #13 (Beat That Bitch With A Bat)" the original mix on a single sided, yellow label 12", and then Jam & Spoon "Age Of Love (Watch Out For Stella mix) brought in about half way through, let the mix run for about a minute, then taken out then back to the start and mixed in again. If you get it right it takes on a life of its own, and builds and builds to an awesome climax!
A perfect ecstacy moment. It's as if they were made for each other.
Eddie asked my brother Jason if Richie could play, and Jason said "No way, I'm on next!".............Nah, did he fuck! He said "Yeah, too right he can play if he wants"!!
Well, you're not gonna knock back a Richie Hawtin set for free, are you!!!
So Richie comes over just as I'm finished my set, and says "Hey, that was a cool mix you did with the Johnny Dangerous track"......gawd, it still gives me goose bumps thinking about it all these years later!
I just wish we'd got a tape of his set, but he wouldn't let us record it as a condition of him going on.
That was a brilliant gig, made even better by Richie Hawtin playing an hour long set.
It's not every day you get a techno superstar to play your gig for free!!

Imagine a 1990 party on the South Coast of England. The first 2 DJs had played boppy club hits and some decent house tracks. Next guy comes on and opens with this. Cue all sorts of WTF and scenes of mentalist stomping all over the place. Never forget.

ripped the cones of my speakers wide open trying to recreate this on an sh-101. What a fkin tune. no overly complicated nonsense, just bass, kick, hats and few bleeps and a few samples......absolutely busting it !!

All the best techno has very few elements involved, but they just work together perfectly. That’s a real art.
