I Don't Think So
Dinosaur Jr. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's the last time that I saw her face
In that special way to me
Without a warnin'
She pulled every trick to name a few
What was I supposed to be ?
[Chorus:]
I'd like to think she cried for me
But I don't know
Her memories won't let me be
Just can't let go
In the morning is when I think about her
Could it be she cried for me ?
I don't think so
In the evening
I don't think it was a peacefull scene
Seemed to me a little rough
She was leavin'
But she forgot to leave a piece of me
I didn't know she was that tough
I don't know why she'd see me
I don't know what else to be
[Chorus]
Is there something
That I could do to make her feel a thing ?
I don't know what to expect
Guess there's one thing
I got left but then I could be wrong
Maybe that's the thing she wrecked
I don't know
Why she'd see me
I don't know what else to be
Hope she's diggin' being free but
[Chorus]
I'd like to think she cried for me
I don't think so
The first verse of "I Don't Think So" by Dinosaur Jr. portrays a person, possibly the singer/protagonist, waking up one morning with the memory of the last time they saw someone they cared about. The lines "It's the last time that I saw her face / In that special way to me" suggests a hint of nostalgia, and perhaps the finality of a goodbye. The suddenness of the event is emphasized by the phrase "Without a warnin'". This is followed by the second verse, where the tone shifts to a feeling of unease and confusion through the portrayal of the singer's ex-partner as manipulative and elusive. The lines "She pulled every trick to name a few / What was I supposed to be?" suggest that the singer may have been constantly trying to live up to their partner's expectations, without any clear direction.
The chorus "I'd like to think she cried for me / But I don't know / Her memories won't let me be / Just can't let go / In the morning is when I think about her / Could it be she cried for me? / I don't think so" repeats twice, with slight variations. The repetition reinforces the idea that the singer is haunted by the memories of their past relationship and the unanswered question of what their former partner truly felt. The phrasing of "I'd like to think she cried for me" suggests that the singer is clinging to the hope that their former partner cared for them, but the uncertainty of "I don't know" and "I don't think so" prevents them from fully letting go.
In the final verse, the singer expresses a mix of resentment and resignation towards their former partner, wondering "Is there something / That I could do to make her feel a thing?" The implication here is that the singer may feel powerless to affect their former partner's emotions, or that their former partner may no longer have feelings for them. The final lines of the song "I'd like to think she cried for me / I don't think so" once again convey the singer's inability to let go of the past and to accept the ambiguity of their relationship.

In the morning
When I wake up
It's the last time that I saw her face
The final moment I saw her
In that special way to me
The way she claimed to love me
Without a warnin'
Unexpectedly
She pulled every trick to name a few
She manipulated me
What was I supposed to be ?
I don't know what she expected of me
[Chorus:]
Refrain repeating throughout the song
I'd like to think she cried for me
I want to believe she still loves me
But I don't know
I'm unsure
Her memories won't let me be
I can't stop thinking about her
Just can't let go
I'm having a hard time moving on
In the morning is when I think about her
Daydreaming about her is a morning routine
Could it be she cried for me ?
Maybe she shed tears for me
I don't think so
But I highly doubt it
In the evening
At night
I don't think it was a peacefull scene
I believe there was an argument
Seemed to me a little rough
It was quite intense
She was leavin'
She was departing
But she forgot to leave a piece of me
She took everything and broke my heart
I didn't know she was that tough
I realized she was stronger than I thought
I don't know why she'd see me
I don't understand why she would ever want to be with me
I don't know what else to be
I don't know what more I can do/be for her
Is there something
I wonder if there's anything
That I could do to make her feel a thing ?
Is there anything I can do to make her care about me again?
I don't know what to expect
I don't know what kind of reaction I'll get
Guess there's one thing
Maybe there's one idea
I got left but then I could be wrong
I have something left, but it may not work
Maybe that's the thing she wrecked
Perhaps she already destroyed it
Hope she's diggin' being free but
I hope she's happy, but
[Chorus]
Refrain repeating throughout the song
I'd like to think she cried for me
I want to believe she still loves me
I don't think so
But I highly doubt it

I have to listen to this song over and over. It takes me on a ride from begining to end. The guitar solo has so much feeling in it and as it cries i sometimes cry with it. One of the best solos ever...

I seriously hope they would play this live someday. A great song and underrated band for sure!

I don't know why they don't play this, they only play "Feel the pain" from "Without a sound", and I believe this song and other songs in this album are way better.

They hate it cause it got poppy and they hate poppy shit maybe poppies they love but not that other establishment crap

@Clifford Duzz lmao what? It’s not like Dinosaur Jr was ever some experimental avant- garde band or some cutting edge loud band . It’s great music but they aren’t necessarily anti pop or something that would shock mainstream audiences lol

These guys played ‘Out There’ on Jenny Jones for fuck’s sake! They definitely had their pop run during the early mid 90s. They need to stop their pretensions if any and play this song immediately!
I think they couldn’t find the right muppets for a live gig.

You realize the world is a twisted and weird fucking place , when such a brilliant band like Dinosaur Jr. doesn't get all the recognition and success they fucking deserve.
You got to love this guys.

This song has a lot of melodic pop sense. Such crafty songwriting by Mascis. Just like a Beatles tune, Mascis is on Lennon's and McCartney's level

I've always loved J.'s Drum fils on this song. Also, the way he bends the strings 3x, at the beginning of the solo, reminds me of the way a drummer normally hits the snare 3x fast. (Just a few observations, since J. said once he wanted to "make his guitar sound like drums." he really succeeds at that here IMHO)
