Sunbather
Deafheaven Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Held my breath and drove through a maze of wealthy homes
I watched how green the trees were
I watched the steep walkways and the white fences
I gripped the wheel
I sweated against the leather
I watched the dogs twist through the wealthy garden
I watched you lay on a towel in grass that exceeded the height of your legs
I gazed into reflective eyes
I cried against an ocean of light

Crippled by the cushion, I sank into sheets frozen by rose pedal toes
My back shivered for your pressed granite nails
Dishonest and ugly through the space in my teeth
Break bones down to yellow and crush gums into blood
The hardest part for the weak was stroking your fingers with rings full of teeth

It's 5 AM and my heart flourishes at each passing moment

Always and forever

Overall Meaning

Deafheaven's "Sunbather" speaks about a person's inner turmoil, as they navigate through wealthy neighborhoods, watching their surroundings and feeling uneasy with themselves. The opening lines of the song describe this person as they drive through a maze of wealthy homes, commenting on the green trees, steep walkways, and white fences, alluding to the affluence of the area. As they drive through this affluent neighborhood, they express inner conflict, as symbolized by their sweaty grip on the wheel.

The second verse expresses their inner turmoil further, as they speak of their physical vulnerability and their deep desire for their loved one. They feel crippled by the comfort of their bed, and they are in pain from the injuries caused by their loved one's teeth. They are aware of their own ugliness, and they are uncomfortable with their space in the world, lashing out at those around them. Despite all of this, their heart flourishes at 5 AM, showing that there is still hope for redemption.

Overall, the song speaks to the battle between inner and outer worlds, describing a person who is struggling with themselves and the environment around them. It reflects the human experience of feeling out of place and disconnected from the world while fiercely holding onto hope.

1. Dream House

Hindered by sober restlessness. Submitting to the amber crutch. The theme in my aching prose. Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan; that pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame. The rebirth of mutual love. The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly.

"I'm dying."
- "Is it blissful?"
"It's like a dream."
- "I want to dream."

4. Please Remember

Twisting and turning beside the slumbering Tereza, he recalled something she had told him a long time before in the course of an insignificant conversation. They had been talking about his friend Z, when she announced, 'If I hadn't met you, I'd certainly have fallen in
love with him.'

Even then, her words had left Tomas in a strange state of melancholy, and now he realized it was only a matter of chance that Tereza loved him and not his friend Z. Apart from her consummated love for Tomas, there were, in the realm of possibility, an infinite number of
unconsummated loves for other men.

We all reject out of hand the idea that the love of our life may be something light or weightless; we presume our love is what must be, that without it our life would no longer be the same; we feel Beethoven himself, gloomy and awe-inspiring, is playing to our own great
love.

5. Vertigo

Destined as the servant to the night where
your moon dreams of the dirt and the
sharp tongue of your zealous will is only
congruent with the salt in your mouth and
the approaching eulogy of the world. Lost
in the patterns of youth and the ghost of
your aches comes back to haunt you. And
the forging of change makes no difference.
Memories fly through the mask of your life
shielding you from time. The years that
birthed the shell that you gained. Hunched
over in apathetic grief with a disregard for
steps except the one taken back. Perched
up on a rope crafted in smoke / a sword
wielding death that buried your hope.
Focusing on light through the blinds. A
slave to reality under a monarch in the sky.
Lost in the patterns of youth where the
windows shine brightly back at you.

6. Windows

7. The Pecan Tree

Drooling red from my eyes to meet the bitter
sun that shines past into light. Setting fire
to curtains in hope that you’re dreaming.
Destroying the tomb of memories from your
life. In the room full of family, but couldn’t
find one. In the hallways lit up brightly,
but couldn’t find myself. I laid drunk on
the concrete on the day of your birth in
celebration of all you were worth.
I am my father’s son.
I am no one.
I cannot love.
It’s in my blood.

1.  Whether people like it or not doesn't relate to whether or not the music has been written from within or without the (sub-) culture that spawned its form.  The "hipster" term is used against bands/musicians that incorporate divergent aspects of various kinds of music without taking the time to fully integrate them in their composition; in short, it's cherry picking for the sake of aesthetic.  This album seems to me a prime example of such behaviour, except that it's not even particularly original in its appropriations.

2.  Arguably, the best music of which we have records - namely, the world's Classical traditions - are all written within relatively strict guidelines (compared to, say, rock'n'roll or other forms of pop music).  There is very little room for divergence, and yet no better music is created (using as objective criteria as we can).  In fact, it would appear that having to work within a rubric would provide a firmer support for a composer's vision: much of the form is already worked out, leaving much more time for the composer to focus on content rather than style.

I understand the point that you're trying to make, but I would like you to consider music from an evolutionary standpoint: some mutations are successful, some are not.  A dog with gills will not live very long; a frog with wings is probably just an easier target for birds; a man with feet for hands will have a tough time of it.

Similarly, music which takes bits from here and there, stitching them together willy-nilly, is unlikely to be powerful, emotive, or lasting in its effect on the populace.  Music that has a firm tradition behind it - no matter how much it might break from that tradition - is more likely to communicate something of value to people, simply because that way of expressing ideas and emotions through sound is tried and tested.

Look at it this way: if you speak English and Spanish, and I start talking to you in Spanglish, you're going to have a harder time understanding me than if I spoke either language on its own, despite the fact that you speak both fluently.  Furthermore, I'll have a much harder time saying anything to you.  Communication fails when it attempts to draw on conflicting sets of signifiers; what would you make of blackened electrofunk?  Death soul?  How about crust jazz?

@gerunkwon2598

I agree with everything you said except that it is dark sounding. It doesn't sound dark. The band plays happy and uplifting melodies with major keys/scale (lower notes) which are the scales that traditional black metal uses to give it a dark tone. The lyrics are also very deep and full of emotion:

Hindered by sober restlessness. Submitting to the amber crutch. The theme in my aching prose. Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan; that pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame. The rebirth of mutual love. The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly.

"I'm dying."
- "Is it blissful?"
"It's like a dream."
- "I want to dream."

@StalinBballin

First and foremost, Deathwish Inc. distributed this album, so of course it's good. They don't release things they don't believe in.

Who gives a fuck about a genre, or being called a hipster.

I got my dad to listen to this record.
His words were, "it sounds like a really heavy Pink Floyd"

He's 51 years old.
Good music is good.
Stop fighting, and get on with your life.

Once we have figured out the genre, we should argue about what shade of pink is the prettiest on this album cover.
