Yesterday I was out walking along the river, listening to folklore as the sun was setting, and I saw this couple on the pier. There was no one else on the pier, it was just them, and they were dancing. At that moment this song came on in my earphones and it was just the most magical moment. I think this song is way deeper than just wanting to get the attention of one guy; it's about trying to stay relevant to the public. At the end of the day, Taylor Swift is an artist, but she knows she has to compromise somehow to do what she wants to do, but still manage to please the general public. I remember that scene in Miss Americana where she found out Reputation did not get any of the main category nominations at the Grammys. After finding out the results, she said, "I just need to make a better record." And even though the person she's talking to on the phone said that Reputation is a great album (even though it is!), she kept insisting that she will do something better. Just like any human being, she wants that validation of having a lot of people appreciate her art. This song talks about that in such a subtle way. This song is probably for the ppl who’s trying to do everything they can and always giving their best, so people will look at them and be proud. It’s like they are pressuring theirselves to shine and to be the one who always looked at. Inshort people who seek validation and changing theirself just so they can fit in. But it also goes for the ppl who are struggling to shine or to be looked up and always trying their best just so others can see that they are really trying to get out of the loop and they are giving their best. It’s crazy that she’s one of the richest and most famous women yet she’s remained so relatable through her music. Like when she says something or writes a song like THIS… i’m moved to tears because I feel like it puts the person I am into words. I’m emotional, empathic, an over thinker and a people pleaser. This sounds like one of the more personal songs on the album. The whole circus imagery tells how Taylor feels as a performer in the music industry having to reinvent herself so the audience stay entertained. Then the tight rope imagery... Of course her whole journey must feel like walking on tightrope, the way she is scrutinized and judged for everything she does. i think of this as the more subdued and mature step-up from I Know Places. the "hush, when no one is around my dear" and being on her "highest tip toes" could allude to her and her SO having to avoid media attention as to what they do together. Mirrorball in my opinion is about changing yourself for others. Having a different personality for your friends and relatives or someone else. I feel like she's a true empath and many times these people reflect and reflect and reflect while in relationships or conversations with others, to the point where the other person might realize some deep truth about themselves or else fall in love. Or else a person who is insecure about their identity or having some kind of crisis of identity, who is essentially a social chameleon and can easily fit in any and every situation almost as if they are personality shape-shifting. I have a different interpretation tho. For me, mirrorball represents "the other girl" in-between Betty and James' relationship (the three main characters on folklore). Here she probably met James for the first time and flirted with him (started in beautiful rooms on illicit affairs) hence the lyrics such as "hush", "You'll find me on my tallest tiptoes", and "I'll show you every version of yourself tonight." And the lines "I know the ending is near" and the way she tried her best to catch his attention all the time is indicating that she is fully aware that she is just his flings but still tries her best to get him entirely.

Out of all the songs from the folklore album, this was the one I related to the most. The way that even if the circus was called off, she was still there, even though the mirrorball has been broken for a couple of times, it still shines. And the 'I've never been a natural, all I do is try try try' part, hits me straight to the heart

to me, this song will always resonate with me “i’ve never been a natural all i do is try try try”
it’s never easy to keep getting back up on your feet and carrying on with our lives staying busy and constantly feel like you always have to bring something new to the table to “satisfy” a certain situation. applause to her for the existence of this song! 🙏🏻

This song is about us, her fans. She is our "mirrorball" because her biggest strength as an artist has been to share personal stories in her songs in which we find our own stories. She often explains that that is her niche, what makes her unique in the industry today. Because of her abiity to reach us, when we listen to an entire album of hers, or go to her shows, we see "every version" of ourselves. She gets us dancing so "I'll get you out on the floor". Then, "I can change everything about me to fit in" is about the changes (colors, aesthetic, sounds, themes) she presents in each album, which she's said before, is about keeping the audience interested and surprised. "I've never been a natural [her voice has never been her strength], all I do is try, try, try [she's one of the hardest workers in the industry] I'm still on that trapeze [even after all her success she still feels like she has something to prove], I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me [she will still try to reinvent herself for every album, and continue trying to keep us intrigued with all her easter eggs and such].

This is my interpretation too! When they call off the circus, the horses, and the rodeo clowns - meaning that they’re taking down her platform for fresher and younger artists to shine. But she’s still on that tightrope doing everything to keep people interested in her. In Miss Americana, she talks about how she thinks she only has a few years left before her popularity dwindles, just like all the artists before her. I feel so sad for her, people keep saying that Taylor Swift is over after 1989 era, but she’s still trying to do well so her fans would not get bored of her. :(((
