Yesterday When I Was Mad
Pet Shop Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Darling, you were wonderful, you really were quite good
I enjoyed that, though, of course, no one understood
A word of what was going on, they didn't have a clue
They couldn't understand your sense of humour like I do

You're much too kind
I smiled with murder on my mind

Yesterday, when I was mad
And quite prepared to give up everything
Admitting, I don't believe
In anyone's sincerity, and that's what's really got to me

You have a certain quality, which really is unique
Expressionless, such irony, although your voice is weak
It doesn't really matter 'cause the music is so loud
Of course it's all on tape, but no one will find out

You hated me too
But not as much as I hated you

Yesterday, when I was mad
And quite prepared to give up everything
Admitting, I don't believe
In anyone's sincerity, and that's what's really got to me

Then, when I was lonely
I thought again
And changed my mind

Then we posed for pictures with the competition winners
And argued about the hotel rooms, and where to go for dinner
And someone said: "It's fabulous you're still around today,
You've both made such a little go a very long way"

Yesterday, when I was mad
And quite prepared to give up everything
Admitting, I don't believe
In anyone's sincerity, and that's what's really got to me

Yesterday, when I was mad
And quite prepared to give up everything
Admitting, I don't believe
In anyone's sincerity, and that's what's really got to me

Then, when I was lonely
I thought again
And changed my mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pet Shop Boys' "Yesterday When I Was Mad" depict a journey of self-discovery and introspection. The song appears to describe a person who had an experience in the past that led them to become mad and disillusioned with humanity. Despite feeling like no one understood them, they found solace in the company of someone who had a unique, expressionless quality that resonated with them. The lyrics imply that this person also had a sense of humor that others didn't appreciate as much. This connection appears to provide the singer with some level of comfort, even though they admit to smiling with "murder on [their] mind."

As the song progresses, the singer reveals that they had previously been prepared to give up everything because they no longer believed in anyone's sincerity. They describe feeling lonely and changing their mind several times. The lyrics suggest that they ultimately decided to stick around and engage with others, even if it meant arguing about mundane things like hotel rooms and dinner plans. The final repetition of the chorus appears to indicate that the singer has changed their mind about their previous skepticism and is now more open to the possibility of sincerity and connection.

Overall, "Yesterday When I Was Mad" is a reflective song that explores themes of disillusionment, alienation, and the potential for genuine human connection. It is a testament to the Pet Shop Boys' ability to craft music that is both introspective and catchy, and it remains a beloved track among fans of the group.

Can’t believe it’s been nearly 30 years. I was mad at my girlfriend (we married and still are big PSB fans) when I first heard this. I am an architect and was designing our dream home at the time and she was being so over bearing about it. PSB always have had a song that hits us just right with something going on in our lives. Love you guys your the best!

Klaus Rosenberg

I'm glad to hear that. I think that song is also my favorite from PSB. My best regards for you and your wife.

Lifestyles channel

I can’t believe this brilliant song is almost thirty years old
