Christmas Will Break Your Heart
LCD Soundsystem Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Christmas will break your heart
If your world is feeling small
And there's no one on your phone
You feel close enough to call

Christmas will crush your soul
Like that laid back rock 'n' roll
But your body's getting old
And it's much too tired to be so bold

Christmas can wreck your head
Like some listless awkward sex
So you refuse to leave your bed
Get depressed when no one checks

Yeah, Christmas will break your heart
Like the armies of the unrelenting dark
Once the peace talks fall apart
But still I'm coming home to you

Christmas will shove you down
So just lay back in the snow
But that quiet wind won't wake
What inside you has grown cold

And Christmas will drown your love
Like a storm down from above
On your fading memories of
A normal life

Oh, while I thought to make you mine
Believing in the line
That your heart would melt with time
And though you're out with them again
Your thick and fickle friends
They might replace the love that ends

But still I'm coming home to you
To you, to you, to you
Yes you
To you, to you, to you

What if you're done?
What if you don't want it anymore?
So what if they're gone?
So what if they don't love you anymore?

I'm coming home
Can you see me?
Can you still see me?
Hey mama, take my hand!

The song warns of the dangers of Christmas, suggesting that it can break your heart and crush your soul, highlighting the loneliness and isolation that can come with a world feeling small and nobody being reachable by phone. The dynamic build-up of the lyric’s message adds to this overall feeling of internal turmoil, as James Murphy, the lead singer, sings of the stormy nature of the festive season, leaving the memory of a normal life in its wake.

The powerfully emotive nature of the song carries through its lyrics and is further embedded in the complex soundscapes and layered instrumentation used in its production. The use of piano chords and drum machines, along with Murphy's distinctive vocal delivery, creates a distinctive and poignant atmosphere, perfectly encapsulating the bleakness of the song’s message. The repetitiveness of the phrase “Still, I’m coming home to you” adds to the overall sentimentality of the track, highlighting a sense of desperation and clinging to lost connections.

Overall, "Christmas Will Break Your Heart" is a heartbreaking and haunting song that captures the pain and isolation felt by those who find themselves alone during the holiday season. Sometimes it feels like James Murphy is the only person who can accurately capture just how I feel. From the absurdity of "Losing My Edge" to the bittersweet nostalgia of "All My Friends" and now this. He's a sage for all the hopeful nihilists ruminating alone on those late nights when all hope seems lost. What I would give to buy him a beer, shake his hand and just give him a nod.

As i sit depressed within my room's boundaries, i feel happy that an old friend came around to sit and feel sad with me. Merry Christmas, LCD.
