Nevermore without Soft Machine. I totally and completely love them..
Mike Anderson
most underrated band in the entire world.
JC JC
Theyre not underrated with people that know them and other stuff
mrhoffame
It is a flat out shame that I just discovered this band about three weeks ago. Was in record store and the guys started playing this vinyl lp and I was like "what the heck is that?" lol It was jammin'. I had him take it off and put it right in my hands. Been discovering them every day since.
Frank Geeraerts
It is never too late 😀
Sergejs Dolgopolovs
Yes.. they are incredibly underrated, but if you think from the artists perspective, it's better off this way. I for one would feel a greater sense of accomplishment if I wouldn't make it to the top of the music industry, but after a few years be discovered by a handfull of people, that would say: This is it! This changes my view on things.
That, for me, seem not too far from romantic.
What good is there in a legion of fans, when only a few of them really understand you?
Dominic Griffiths
Played this track to a primary Year 6 (10/11) class after we visited caves in the Yorkshire Dales...they said that this really got the spooky sense of water dripping in the caves and the subterranean animals and insects....great field trip...i hope at least some of those youngsters took away an appreciation of the mighty Softs !
simon price
I followed them from 67 til 72, saw all their gigs in London.....brilliant brain food....

The greatest band of their era, but several reasons they were nothing like the most underrated band in the world. 1. America is not the world (I say this as an American). 2.They were on Columbia--one of the major labels 3. They were the jazz-rock equivalent of Mayall's bands--springboard for emerging stars (e.g., Holdsworth & John Marshall) and where established guys did work (e.g., Jack Bruce). Not being as big as Miles Davis or Cream still doesn't make them--my favorite ever band--underrated.
Fabio Copponi
Mike Ratledge's compositions sometimes have this kind of "Ambient Techno" sound, like the beginning of Drop..very advanced/avantgard for that period...
thelonious ratledge
Original-Steve
Lots of floating Suspended minor chords, very Detroit....
Ronald Petrin
I believe an extension of this sound can be found in the volumes of great head trips of Ozric Tentacles I believe have been around since the late eighties.
thelonious ratledge
conrad caldwell
Mike Rutleddge and the rest of the band were ahead of their time, even now...
For those interested, Soft Machine's French version was called Matching Mole, play on Machine Molle (Soft Machine in French).
Many of the band members played there with Wyatt, and members of Gong too.
Frank Geeraerts

Fan since I heard their music in my ears, strange at first. Somewhere 1972. Collected all records I could find of them since and enjoy listening to them untill today. Met Matching Mole some 10 years ago. Same weird world of music. When you're in the mood, needing to take off.
Frank Geeraerts
Same experience since early seventies ...........they never left me since......

This album was in my High School library. I took it out on loan. This was maybe late 1984. It's a wonderful thing when thoughtful little treasures find their way into mostly conservative institutions.
chatelain567
When jazz was dying a slow death in the States the european took it up a notch and made Miles and company proud; a definite miles-tone in rock-jazz fusion.

Even the cover tells you that this is something else!

How can you hate this band?
Frank Geeraerts
+Don E Gee Like your comment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i bought third in the early seventies....and so on........unearthly, genius and eternal........a voyage in the universe........they took me far away of the illusions they tried to teach me..their music lives on in me...since.

Beautiful song, but Willie B did a magnificent job turning it into Black THougHts.

Pink Floyd with jazz qualities??? No. Maybe Rick Wright was a little bit an improviser...Wyatt and particulary Ratledge were great improvisers. The the two bands were connected only at the beginning, but listen "The Soft Machine" (1968)...can you find any connection?

What's all this 'underrated' crap - they were superstars - hit albums, big tours, TV and radio shows - massive in Europe - please think before using that horrible word - and it's an insult to their popularity also
