The 13th Floor Elevators, who formed and released their debut album in 1965, are often credited as being one of the first, if not the first psychedelic rock band. Other bands like The Charlatans (who formed in 1964, but would not release their debut album until 1969) had a similar style, but The 13th Floor Elevators brought the style of music to prominence among the mainstream. In the following years, more psychedelic rock acts began to emerge, such as Love, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Kaleidoscope, and The Pink Floyd. Bands that were active before the popularization of psychedelia, such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, began to move their music in a more psychedelic direction as well.
There are many subgenres of psychedelic rock as well, such as space rock, acid rock, and psychedelic pop. From the seeds of psychedelic rock emerged genres like hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, and experimental rock. Neo-psychedelia began to emerge in the 1980s, with bands such as Spacemen 3 and Loop. Contemporary bands that could be described as psychedelic rock include The Warlocks, The Black Angels, KingBathMat & Dead Meadow

(Yes, and um, I'm with you Derek, this star nonsense)
(Yes, yes)
(Now, which is it?)
(I am sure of it)
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell?
Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here
The song "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd was released in 1975 and is considered one of their most iconic songs. The song is about the feelings of estrangement and disconnection that the songwriter feels and reflects on the culture of greed and corruption that has become dominant. The song talks about how people trade their true heroes for ghosts and get lost in the rat race of the corporate world. The first lines of the song suggest that the speaker is skeptical about the therapeutic methods used by society to reform people, which includes discipline and penal systems.
The lyrics then move on to ask some soul-searching questions, which are poetic and philosophical in nature. The speaker asks the listener if they can tell the difference between heaven and hell, blue skies and pain, or even a smile and a veil. These questions are intended to provoke introspection in the listener and make them question their belief system. The lyrics then shift to accuse society of creating a system where people get comfortable with discomfort, which is shown by the exchange of hot ashes for trees, hot air for a cool breeze, and cold comfort for change.
The song then moves on to a personal lament where the speaker expresses their longing for a person who is not present. This could be interpreted as a mourning of a loved one who has passed away or a longing for a more authentic connection in a world where people are increasingly disconnected. The song's final lines "we're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground, what have we found? The same old fears, wish you were here" eloquently portray the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of repetition and the desire for a deeper connection.

I’m 14 but man this song always just hits. My dad liked this song and we’d play along to it with our guitars all the time, he passed a few months ago and he was still really young. I hear this song it breaks me apart sometimes…hearing it now as I’m a little older and paying more attention to the lyrics it just all comes together, this is truly one of the best songs ever created and im glad that my dad put me on this music, lots of memories i’ll never forget.
wish you were here❤️
