Generation Lost
B.o.B Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Turbulence. Can you feel? Turbulence) Okay. (Can you feel?)
I need to spit something real for a second y'all. (Turbulence)
Just bare with me. Listen. (Can you feel? Turbulence.)

Skull and crossbones and death bandannas
A liquor store on every corner in Atlanta
Cops ridin' around tossin' niggas in the slammer
Tell me what's wrong
I could really use some answers
Now-a-days everybody wants to be a rapper
About two years ago everybody was a trapper
Obviously, money is what everybody's after
Cause slavery ain't change
It's a modern day disaster
Now these are my words from me to you
Everything you do from your shades to your shoes
From your chains to your Coupe
Came from the tube
Trust me I would know
I was raised on it too
Okay, now just let me get your attention
I'm a turn the tables so you don't get defensive
I'm a put my bullshit aside for a second
Cause I can't be fake
Cause God won't let me
I used to wear a grill
Because it was the trend
Not because I liked it
I just wanted to fit in
Then I got "Eastside" tatted on my skin
And I tried to get dreads but my hair was too big
But I was lost
I ain't know who I was
What else was there to do besides look like a thug
So in my senior year at Columbia High
I dropped out of high school and I got signed
B.o.B. was the name
I ain't like Bobby Ray cause I was ashamed
But you can call me Bobby Ray from this day forth
And I could give a damn about the fame and fortune
Honestly I don't even listen to rap
Cause when I turn the radio on, out comes crap
And if you make good music that's okay
But on the radio, that they don't play
It's easy to see we created a beast
Cause everybody wants to hear what they don't need
And now all the rappers got to struggle to give you
That bullshit music so they can continue
To live
The position that I'm in
Is quite an interesting predicament I will admit
But you can count on me cause I'm refusing to give in
Cause I'm a give you music cause we need it to exist
Bitch
So I'm a play my guitar
Rap about aliens and sing about stars
Till you understand that's what we are
So we ain't got to struggle no more so we don't starve
I swear to God I love you with every bar
We all got problems that need to be solved
So while I got the mic I'm a speak my thoughts
And I'm a keep it real till the day I fall

Overall Meaning

In his song "Generation Lost," B.O.B. raps about the struggles and issues that are affecting the world today. He starts with a reference to the skull and crossbones and the death bandannas, which are symbols of danger and death. He then talks about the prevalence of liquor stores on every Atlanta corner and how cops are tossing people in the slammer. He's asking what's wrong and why these issues still exist in our modern times.

B.O.B. then talks about the prevalence of rap music and how people are chasing after money instead of focusing on social issues. He admits that he used to wear a grill and get tattoos so he could fit in with the rap scene. However, he eventually got lost and didn't know who he really was. He dropped out of school and became a signed artist known as "B.o.B." because he was ashamed of his real name, Bobby Ray. He also didn't like the direction that rap music was taking and how it's turned into cheap and shallow tunes on the radio.

Despite all the struggles and issues that the world is facing, B.O.B. still chooses to create music that speaks to people's hearts and minds. He wants to use his talent to make an impact in the world and solve problems. He wants people to understand that we're all in this together and we need to support each other.

Overall, "Generation Lost" is a powerful song that addresses relevant social issues and challenges listeners to make a difference in the world.

I don’t understand how you can possibly thumbs down this video

@ceea3206

He recorded this originally in like 2007.
Tiime reeeeeally flys yeah.
Remember when B.o.B was a thing from like 2008 - 2012,
2010 he was on top especially but by 2013 he tried to go back to that trap, gutta street shit and no one was convinced.
Hope he's back on some concious stuff now, esp. with all that's going on in the world right now.

@byrdewells6371

B.O.B hasn't changed, sure he has to produce some bangers n club shit but he still produces real and lyrically good rap. His new mixtape "New Black" combines all his songs where he talks about all problems surrounding the music industry, the U.S, the world, etc. Paper route, this song, his ferguson response, etc. are all dope. He may have hit fame but this B.O.B above is still here.

@robertfish6779

10,years since I heard it and still know every word. Love this song.

@quakerboy2016

love this song i never get tired of it easily one of his best songs

@TheAndroop

@2:13 "So While I got tha Mic I'mma speak my thoughts and I will keep it Real TILL THA DAY I FALL!!!"

And Years later he kept his word with WATER, FIRE, EARTH & AIR.. Respect man! This Song Is so legendary lol!

@maekayla

It's honestly so annoying seeing all these comments about how B.o.B has changed & his outlook on life has changed. If you don't look closely & if you aren't paying attention it may seem like his music/lyrics are constantly contradicting. The thing is he's keeping it real, I think there are 2 reasons he drops "club bangers/radio bangers" the first being the fact that he and draw people in, they hear a "mainstream" song they like then they look him up. The second reason being maybe he wants to show that he is in fact human and he can be tempted by all the things that he warns us not to be tempted by. He's just like us, he tells us that in all of his music. From standing up for what he believes in, getting money, fucking "bitches"... A lot of you people don't understand that he's in the industry, an industry where money comes first, and if shit like Missing, Paper Route, Generation Lost, etc.. won't sell, for 2 very specific reasons, then it won't get any air time. So get over yourselves people who keep commenting about how they'll never buy another song of his, stop being so close minded & look at things differently. Like I said, B.o.B is one of the realist in the industry

@kyleslusher26

@amoose8439

This was the first rap song I actually listened too. I hum it every now and then and think about just how right on he was.
