Something in the Orange
Zach Bryan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It'll be fine by dusk light I'm telling you, baby
These things eat at your bones and drive your young mind crazy
But when you place your head between my collar and jaw
I don't know much but there's no weight at all

And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
'Cause if I say I miss you I know that you won't
But I miss you in the mornings when I see the sun
Something in the orange tells me we're not done

To you I'm just a man, to me you're all I am
Where the hell am I supposed to go?
I poisoned myself again
Something in the orange tells me you're never coming home

I need to hear you say you've been waitin' all night
There's orange dancing in your eyes from bulb light
Your voice only trembles when you try to speak
Take me back to us dancing, this wood used to creak

To you I'm just a man, to me you're all I am
Where the hell am I supposed to go?
I poisoned myself again
Something in the orange tells me you're never coming home

To you I'm just a man, to me you're all I am
Where the hell am I supposed to go?
I poisoned myself again
Something in the orange tells me you're never coming home

If you leave today, I'll just stare at the way
The orange touches all things around
The grass, trees and dew, how I just hate you
Please turn those headlights around
Please turn those headlights around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Zach Bryan's song "Something in the Orange" speak to the deep pain and longing for lost love. The opening line, "It'll be fine by dusk light I'm telling you, baby" acknowledges the temporary and fleeting nature of the pain, suggesting that it will pass by the time night falls. However, the following lines reveal the true weight of the pain: "These things eat at your bones and drive your young mind crazy." The singer then turns to their lover and describes the relief they feel when they find solace in their embrace, "I don't know much but there's no weight at all."

The next verse speaks to the dilemma of expressing one's pain and longing to a former lover who may not reciprocate those feelings. "And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't 'cause if I say I miss you I know that you won't." The use of "damned" suggests that there is no right answer and that either choice (expressing or not expressing feelings) will lead to negative consequences. The lyrics then describe the feeling of something stirring within the singer when they see the color orange: "Something in the orange tells me we're not done."

The final verse reveals the desperation of the singer's longing. They describe themselves as "poisoned" and acknowledge that their love is likely never coming back. The final lines of the song describe the singer watching the orange light as their lover drives away, begging for them to turn around.

As a single dad , this song has really helped me

My son is in the crib right now listening to it

I would sing it to him since birth , it’s my and his mothers break up song

He’ll cry or be upset , and I’ll put this on and start singing and he’ll shut right up …

I can’t count how many times I’ve cried , driving around thinking about him and his mother , this song will forever have a place in my heart

I wish we could make that wood creek again

But I know the head lights will never turn around

Been listening to this guy on youtube for years. Today I had to drive my best friend (my dog) to the vet to say his final goodbye and this song came on the radio. You made it man. You finally made it. Last song my Frankie boy ever heard. He always loved just laying out in the sun and basking. Now everytime I see the sun's orange hue across the sky I'll think of my buddy. "But I miss you in the mornings when I see the sun."

Damn man, I know the feeling!
Sorry for the loss!
He's was a part of your life, but you were probably his whole life, something to be said on that.
A constant companion.
No matter how bad your day, your feelings, etc.., a dog will never have a day in his life that he isn't happy to see you.
My boy Blu brings tears to my eyes everytime I think about the day I have to make this trip with him.
Be well my friend.
