In the City
Adamski Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at the people, everywhere
Ridin' the subway, to Times Square
They're like little insects, crawlin' around
How many angels, live in this town?

I'm loving you, ?oh make me lovin' you?
So I've been lost, escape this, you must do

Black hole, naked soul
Liquid gold, let it roll in the city
Black hole, naked soul
Liquid gold, let it roll in the city

The temperature's rising, everywhere
Help me I'm melting, I'm turning to air
So I am inside you, every breath you take
I'm oxygenetic, for heaven's sake

I'm loving you, ?oh make me lovin' you?
So I've been lost, escape this, you must do

Black hole, naked soul
Liquid gold, let it roll in the city
Black hole, naked soul
Liquid gold, let it roll in the city

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Adamski's song "In the City" describe the hustle and bustle of daily life in New York City, and the anonymous struggle of its inhabitants. The first verse paints a picture of people going about their daily routines, riding the subway and crowded into Times Square like insects. The question is posed, how many angels live in the city? This can be interpreted as pointing to the idea that despite the overwhelming atmosphere of anonymity and constant motion of the city, there are still moments of beauty and divinity to be found.

The second verse shifts focus to the singer's own experience within the city, describing how the temperature rises and he feels as though he is melting, turning to air. The line "I am inside you, every breath you take, I'm oxygenetic for heaven's sake" suggests a connection being drawn between the individual experience of living in the city and a wider sense of collective experience. It is as though the singer is both an observer of the city and embodying its energy at the same time.

The repeated refrain of "Black hole, naked soul, liquid gold, let it roll in the city" captures the complex emotional landscape of life in the city. The black hole could be interpreted as the sense of being lost or swallowed up by the city, while the naked soul speaks to vulnerability and exposure. Liquid gold could represent both the precious moments of beauty and connection that can be found within the city, as well as the constant flow of people and energy. The command to "let it roll in the city" suggests surrender to the energy of the city, embracing the chaos and beauty that it offers.

@ShapeOfSuz

One of the most underrated songs of the 90's

@spammy1982

I think it came out in late 2001 and unfortunately, people in the USA weren't in the mood to talk about people like insects running around the city after we just got done watching them jump out of burning towers.

@marcotonel

Grandioso!✌️

@alchemixxx1994

@olegparhimchik

@RodionAznaurov

@alchemixxx1994

@videostanarod
