Redemption
Nathaniel Rateliff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the hours that I've known
And of all of my woes
Are the cause to lay you low
I demand they turn to whole

Just set me free
Just set me free

As it takes it's hold
And it won't let you go
I'm reminded of the cold
And how it's taken so much from me
Are you worthy of being saved?
All your fears and insecurities

Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free

And there's nowhere to hide
And you're only just trying
Are there only just lies you hear?
While redemption seems far away
While I stumble through every day

Just set me free
Just set me free
Just set me free (set me free)
Just set me free

Just set me free
Keep running till we learn to find peace

Just set me free
Keep running till we learn to find peace

Just set me free
Keep running till we learn to find peace

Just set me free
Keep running till we learn to find peace

Just set me free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nathaniel Rateliff’s Redemption explore the theme of liberation and redemption from personal struggles and pain. The singer affirms that despite his current woes, he demands they turn to whole. He is in search of freedom and constantly repeats the phrase “just set me free”. The artist also questions the worthiness of being saved and whether one’s fears and insecurities play a role. The cold is referenced, perhaps as a metaphor for a sense of isolation, loss, and absence of warmth. As he stumbles through everyday life, he finds redemption seemingly far away.

The repetition of the chorus - Just set me free/keep running till we learn to find peace - can be interpreted in a couple of ways. The first could be that he is requesting his pain be taken away and for him to find peace. The second interpretation could be that he acknowledges one must keep on pushing through everything, even as we encounter obstacles and pain or while we stumble, to ultimately find redemption and peace.

Overall, the lyrics of Redemption are impactful and reflective. They touch on themes of pain, fear, redemption and the ongoing quest for personal liberation and inner peace.

Well hell, my demons have been with me for so long I could no longer tell if they are friend or foe, and part of me is sure I'll walk on down the road and still never truly know

Constant companions through it all, when laid low, or in times when I stood tall, unwanted, ubidden, and they 'mind  me of memories I'd rather keep hidden

Left shoulder, right shoulder, there they perched as if on castle walls like the gargoyles of auld, and they whispered to me in sinister rote as if my future was foretold

They sat on gray stone ramparts built high and wide, and served to keep at bay the truth of my existence, so I resolved to to break through to the other side

To evade the falseness that had so long been made to feel real, to finally find what heart and soul sought, that had time and time once more fallen in silent appeal

I just got out of a 28 day rehabilitation program and this song was at the top of my recommended list here on youtube. I've been blasting this song all day and it has brought me to tears numerous times. It's exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you Nathaniel, for writing such a passionate, emotional plea for peace and understanding. This song will be a daily reminder to seek the best in myself and the world around me.

Stay strong brother, I know nowadays there seems to be alot of division between people because of who they support politically, and I will be the first to admit myself that I have done quite a bit of Trolling online. But, after seeing your post, I want to say, from the bottom of my heart, that I hope you continue down the right path, and honest to god, I am cheering for your continued success. At the end of it all, we are all humans!

@vsutp

one moment of a day at a time. Keep on walking and one day you will look back and see all the people walking with you.

We all are looking for Redemption, for one reason or another, in our lives. Maybe we made a bad decision, maybe we fell in life, maybe we did something we aren’t proud of. Maybe we feel unworthy. Maybe we are struggling to find that worthiness. Maybe we feel we were dealt a bad hand in life. Whatever it may be, We can, will and do find that redemption. The easy part is finding it from others. The hardest part is finding it in ourselves. Trust me, once it is found in ourselves, that is where we start to find that Peace. We start to find our true selves. We start to find worthiness in ourselves. It is then, that our lives start to define us. It is then that we find purpose in ourselves. My Wish is, that you start to see Redemption coming within you and your life. You deserve it. I know you will find it. I believe in you. Believing in yourself, is the hardest part, however, that is where you will find your Redemption.

From someone with a few coins themselves, take it one day at a time. The first year is always the hardest and I know you can do it.
