Too Much
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

I could have read of your heart, I could have read of your mind
But now I'm lonely as that, I put up a fight
So pick up your battering ram, love, I want to see it
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that anyway
Maybe I talk too fast, maybe I talk too much
Give me the sensitive laugh, or give me the sensitive touch
Even if I could have kissed, even if I could be the blind
I'm so sorry I tried, love, I want to see it
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that anyway
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love
There's too much riding on that anyway
There's too much riding on that
There's too much riding on that
There's too much riding on that
There's too much riding on that
In Sufjan Stevens's song Too Much, the lyrics express a sense of regret and heartache from a failed relationship. The singer wishes he could have understood his lover better, saying that if he had been a different person with "blood in his eyes", he could have read their heart and mind. However, now he is "lonely as that" and is resigned to the fact that there is "too much riding on that" - too much love and too much history to salvage the relationship.
The chorus "There's too much, too much, too much love" is repeated multiple times throughout the song, emphasizing the overwhelming sense of loss and the impossibility of reconciling. The singer apologizes for trying, admitting that he may have talked too much, or too fast, and that he wishes for a softer, more sensitive approach to the situation. However, the love that they shared was too strong, there was too much history, and there is no turning back.
Overall, the song Too Much explores themes of regret, lost love, and the realization that sometimes relationships cannot be saved. The repetition of the chorus drives home the sense of hopelessness and the impossibility of undoing deeply rooted emotions.

Awesome. Remember - a large part of Dylan's fans, feeling jilted that he left behind his harmonica & guitar folk, thought "Bringing it All Back Home" was horrible, that "Subterranean Homesick Blues" was nonsensical garbage... and now it stands as some of the BEST rock n roll of ALL TIME. I'm willing to let go of Sufjan the precious chamber-folk troubadour, and let him change his approach and direction... that's how much I believe in his talent!

Still trying to decide how I feel, but I think I like it so far. Has some Animal Collective gurgles, some Knife beats, some Postal Service/Owl City synth... it's a lot to take in all at once.
