Safe & Sound
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said I'll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

Don't you dare look out your window, darling, everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh (ooh)
Ooh (ooh)
Oh whoa (oh whoa)
Oh whoa (oh whoa)
Ooh (ooh)
Ooh (ooh)
Oh whoa
Oh whoa

Just close your eyes
You'll be alright
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

Overall Meaning

Taylor Swift's song "Safe & Sound" is a tribute to a love that is steadfast, even in times of great chaos and uncertainty. The song tells the story of two people who are facing a war-torn world filled with violence and destruction. The singer reassures her love that they will survive and that everything will be okay, even when everything around them seems to be falling apart.

The first verse describes a memory of their past, where the two were facing immense struggles. The light in their lives was barely visible, but they persevered together. The phrase "all that's dead and gone and passed tonight" suggests that they have moved past those troubles and are facing new ones as the war around them rages on. The singer then encourages her love to close their eyes and trust that no one can hurt them, and that they will be safe and secure when morning comes.

The second verse continues the theme of war and destruction. The line "everything's on fire" is a stark reminder of the world they live in. The singer urges her love to hold onto the lullaby that she sings, as it represents the trust and comfort they can offer each other even when everything else is uncertain. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the idea that even when the world around them is filled with destruction and fear, they will remain safe and sound.

Overall, "Safe & Sound" is a touching ballad that speaks to the power of love in the midst of even the most challenging times. It reminds us of the importance of having someone to rely on and how a simple gesture of comfort, like singing a lullaby, can make all the difference.

Taylor represents Prim as a ghost and she visits District 12, and everything's dead. She's basically singing to Katniss, and the lyrics;

Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire,
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone...

This verse talks about the war, the fire that burned the district down, and when Katniss and her father are gone because they were the music in that household. Also, there is a direct reference to the Hunger Games when she picks up the Mockingjay pin.

THIS MAY BE THE MOST HEARTFELT THING I HAVE EVER POSTED.
