Honestly?
American Football Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Honestly I can't remember (teen dreams)
All my teenage feelings
And the meanings
They seemed too see-through
To be true

All the who's are there
But the whys (but the whys)
Are unclear (are unclear)

Picture this
The long awaited
Sickening kiss
How does it feel (explain)
To know (how)
We've re-written history (these things change)
Despite the complicated
Beginning to all of this
Honestly?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of American Football's song “Honestly” is an introspective and reflective piece about the confusion and uncertainties that come with growing up. The song is recollecting on past teenage experiences, specifically the "teen dreams" and feelings that seemed clear at the time but have now become hazy and difficult to comprehend. The focus of the track is on the disorientation that arises from not fully understanding oneself and the world around oneself.

The lyrics assert that during the teenage years, while it was easy to identify the who’s in one's life, it was challenging to understand 'why' things happened. The lyrics suggest a lack of clarity and understanding regarding the emotions and relationships of teenage years. The verse,“All the who's are there, but the whys are unclear” implies confusion and complexities of adolescent life. The lyrics of the song emphasise the longing to revisit one’s past and re-examine both the joys and confusion of teenage experiences.

“Honestly” is a song that encapsulates the various emotions that come with adolescence - the uncertainty of the future, the confusion of relationships, and the fear of growing up. It offers a candid look at the challenges and perplexities of teenage years and stresses the significance of understanding oneself and others during this crucial period of life.

Discovered this album in an abusive relationship. She made me feel horrible about myself all the time. It was also my first relationship, so it went on and on with me thinking this was what a typical relationship was like. Finally ended it, and three years later met an amazing woman. This album again serenaded an evening for me, but this time it was beautiful and easy--not painful and difficult to comprehend; an evening with a new person that brought me nothing but peace and joy. This song is really about the passage of time, what changes, and what we learn.
