One Last Cigarette
Less Than Jake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I check the time, it's 4:00 a.m.
And I just passed the westside buildings
All the broken glass
As I try to shake the cold away, but anyways,
It's late at night and I'm about to crack
And decide to just walk the tracks
That I just walked yesterday.

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Less Than Jake's "One Last Cigarette" speaks to the isolation and desperation of the singer. It's 4:00 in the morning and he finds himself wandering through a desolate cityscape, filled with broken glass and memories of yesterday's steps. The singer seems to be in a state of emotional upheaval, struggling to shake off the cold (both physically and emotionally) and stave off the urge to crack under the weight of his troubles.

The use of the word "crack" is particularly interesting, as it suggests a sense of fragility and potential harm. It's unclear what exactly has caused this sense of turmoil, but the lyrics evoke a certain sense of hopelessness and frustration. Despite this, the singer seems to be determined to keep moving forward, even if it means walking through familiar (and potentially dangerous) territory.

Overall, "One Last Cigarette" is a poignant exploration of what it means to confront one's own demons at the darkest of hours. It speaks to the uncertainty and pain that can arise from loss, addiction, or simply the overwhelming stresses of life. Yet despite these challenges, the song also suggests that there is always the possibility of finding solace and redemption in the cathartic act of self-reflection and exploration.

Oh yeah, super cool dudes. I saw them at 9:30 Club in DC a few years ago (that was the first time, anyway) and actually hung out with Chris at the bar after the show and had a drink with/talked to him for a good while. Also met/chatted with a couple guys from Catch 22 that same night. All really awesome guys. They're all about the fans, which is awesome.
