So much feeling and controversy about this song. So much that is hidden, even from the artist himself. Reznor was put off by the fact that he perceived some of the people who like this song regard it as a "lust anthem," when his original conscious intention was a "meditation on self-hatred and obsession." The synthesis that escapes Reznor is that it can be both without contradiction. If you read therapist Harville Hendrix and his wife, and apprehend their concept of the Imago, it explains what is going on in this song. Imago theory says that all of our traumatizations and abuses as children cause us to lose contact with what it means to be fully human, self-actualized and in touch with our joy and our connection with people and with existence itself. We take this collage of neglected parts and exiles and amputations, taboos, and things we are forbidden or consider it dangerous to be, and create, subconsciously, an "imago" after the Latin, for image. When we seek out intimate relations, we seek out persons who embody these qualities, and the qualities of the people who injured or traumatized us, in order to get the nurture we missed in childhood. We are seeking to become "complete" and to re-capture the sense of being connected and one with existence. Unfortunately, whereas our love interest allows us to connect with these things and to feel that sense of being connected and "more," that person also inevitably triggers our defenses and our reactions to being or behaving in ways that resulted in our original traumatization. So, there is this remarkable potential for intimate relations to heal us, but also to cause us trouble.
Read the lyrics of this song and tell me that it isn't also about lust, and healing too! It starts with the very title: "Closer." The singer IS meditating on his mal-adaptations to life, his wounds and traumatizations which result in self-loathing and obsessive behaviors, but he is addressing his Imago. He is attracted to the qualities which, were he to embody them, would make him fully human and self-actualized. It's in the lyrics:

Reznor, in the grip of apparent contradiction, is partially in denial. Of course "Closer" is about attraction, and lust. We desire our "other half" as we desire to be fully human, integrated, healthy, in touch with our peace and joy. How could we not be attracted to, even lust for, these things? Look at the chorus:
I wanna f*k you like an animal [viscerally, no just of the heart and spirit, but of the gut and the body]
I wanna feel you from the inside [the desire for communion, connection, one-ness]
I wanna f*k you like an animal [(in case you didn't get it the first time...]
My whole existence is flawed [the Imago has his "missing" parts, can heal his mal-adaptations]
You get me closer to God [...and this is a bad thing, in this instance? Really?]
Look at verse 2:

Sounds gross, doesn't it? He's really delving into self-loathing, right? Consider how another song, this one by the group Mr. Mister put a similar exhortation:
