Lucky In Love
Sherrié Austin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He was a hot-blooded rebel, he was aiming to please
He had more than a tattoo up his sleeve
Marylou, Peggy Sue, Suzy Q, Norma Jean

He was pretty as a picture on his motorbike
He never met a mirror that he didn't like
Sorry dude, with your rude attitude, take a hike

Goodness, gracious, mercy me
Somebody tell me when will I be

Lucky, lucky in love
Roll myself a seven when I throw the dice
I've been waiting for the king of hearts
Still I get the joker every time
When will I be, lucky in love

I met a sweet-talking guy from Paris, Tennessee
He bought me French fries at the Dairy Queen
He came on strong, before too long, he was on bended knee

Now when I hear his footsteps up my block
I hear the tick of his biological clock
Sorry hon', gotta run, it's been fun, still in shock

Goodness, gracious, mercy me
Somebody tell me when will I be

Lucky, lucky in love
Roll myself a seven when I throw the dice
I've been waiting for the king of hearts
Still I get the joker every time
When will I be, lucky in love

Goodness, gracious, mercy me
Somebody tell me when will I be

Lucky, lucky in love
Roll myself a seven when I throw the dice
I've been waiting for the king of hearts
Still I get the joker every time

When will I be
Oh, when will I be
Oh yeah, when will I be
Lucky in love
Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sherrié Austin's "Lucky In Love" depict the singer's frustration at her inability to find a compatible partner. The song's refrain, "Roll myself a seven when I throw the dice, I've been waiting for the king of hearts, still I get the joker every time," suggest that despite her best efforts, she continues to wind up with the wrong guy. The first verse describes a hot-blooded rebel with a long list of women's names, and the second describes a Paris, Tennessee native who proposes too soon. The bridge declares the singer's desire for luck in love and her impatience with the wait. The song's up-tempo melody emphasizes the singer's frustration, and the song's playful tone suggests that she's not taking herself too seriously.

The song was released in 2001 as the lead single off of her album of the same name, "Lucky In Love." The album was produced by John Rich of Big & Rich, who also co-wrote several songs on the album. Austin wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album herself. "Lucky In Love" was a commercial success for Austin and resulted in two other singles reaching the top 40 charts. Her album went on to peak at 45 on the Billboard 200 chart.

She so much deserves a huge comeback. She can out-sing all the new girls.

I grew up super poor in rural Iowa. I had an aunt in Sioux City (aka the big city) who would tape Country Music videos for me. This was on one of those tapes. I memorized the lyrics, the frames of the video. Sherrie Austin could do no wrong in my book. She was the quintessential strong feminine voice of my childhood. I owe her much.

TAM ... AWWWWWW ... WHAT A SWEET STORY !
I WORKED WITH HER ON " NEVER BEEN KISSED" (I PLAYED THE EVIL QUEEN & THE WICKED WITCH). I HAD A BALL ! YOU WILL BE HAPPY TO KNOW THAT SHE IS A SWEETHEART IN PERSON & VERRRRY PRETTY. SHE WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO HEAR YOUR STORY. IF I EVER RUN INTO HER AGAIN, I WILL TELL HER. I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL PRESENTLY. MY FAMILY WAS POOR FOR A WHILE, TOO (I SHOVELED COAL INTO OUR FURNACE IN THE MORNING TO HEAT UP THE HOUSE FOR THE REST OF THE FAMILY). TAKE CARE. HAVE FAITH IN THE LORD & STAY PRAYED UP ! WE ARE IN PERILOUS TIMES
GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR FAMILY, TAM. 🙏.

I don't know her personally, but I always thought she was really adorable. I believe you when you say she was a sweetheart. And I liked the video you mentioned y'all did together. Probably my 2nd favorite of hers to this video ☺️.
