Ones Who Love You
Alvvays Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take, take from the ones who love you, ooh
Leave, leave with the ones who don't, ooh
Lie, lie to the ones who like you, ooh
Lay, lay with the ones who won't

When lightning strikes
I will be on my bike
I won't be stuck inside
I will be taking flight

They, they are the ones who love you, ooh
We, we are the ones who don't, ooh
Hang up on the ones who need you, ooh
Watch out for the ones who won't

When lightning strikes
I'll be on my bike
I won't be stuck inside
I will be taking flight
And when the wheels come off
I'll be an astronaut
But I won't be lost in space
I will be skipping rocks

When you live on an island
Nothing ever falls in place
The winters are violent
And you can't ever feel your face
You can't fucking feel your face

And when lightning strikes
I'll be on my bike
I won't be stuck inside
I will be taking flight
And when the wheels come off
I'll be an astronaut
But I won't be lost in space
I'll be on Lippincott

Oh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Take

Overall Meaning

The song "Ones Who Love You" by Alvvays is a poignant and contemplative reflection on relationships and the often-unpredictable nature of life. The opening lines suggest a kind of personal philosophy or approach to relationships, encouraging listeners to take what they need from those who love them and leave behind those who don't. The lyrics seem to acknowledge the fact that not all love is equal, and that it's okay to prioritize those who are the most important in your life.

The chorus shifts the focus to a more personal level, with the singer speaking directly to the listener about their own experiences with love and life. The imagery of lightning striking and being on a bike suggests a sense of movement or change, while the repeated phrase, "I won't be stuck inside," speaks to a desire for freedom and escape. The use of astronaut imagery in the second verse suggests a longing to explore and discover new things, even as one navigates the tumultuous waters of relationships.

In the final section of the song, the lyrics take on a more specific setting, describing life on an island where things never quite fall into place. The violent winters and the numbness of not feeling one's face speak to a sense of isolation and hardship that might be difficult to understand for those who haven't experienced it. The final lines of the song suggest a hopeful note, with the singer imagining themselves on Lippincott Street, perhaps a metaphor for finding a sense of belonging and home in a chaotic world.

Overall, "Ones Who Love You" is a complex and emotive song that speaks to the struggles of human relationships in a way that is both personal and universal.

This is one of their best songs in their catalogue. Hands down.

So true!

@meghanmacqueen5157

Is this an original? It sounds so familiar to me, but I'm pretty sure I'm new to the group....lovely.

@SFforlife

@@meghanmacqueen5157 Welcome new Alvvays fan! Glad to have you onboard! Yes, this absolutely their original song. Though if it sounds like another song, I’d be intrigued in finding that out as well!

@meghanmacqueen5157

@@SFforlife Thank you xo. I think it must just be the "sound" of the song that seems familiar because I can't think of a specific song that comes to mind. It's beautiful, though!

@SFforlife

@@meghanmacqueen5157 Yeah I feel you, I’ve heard a lot (especially newer) fans describe their sound as making them “feel nostalgic for a time they didn’t experience” lol. They have a lot of beautiful songs but this is one of their very best, IMO. It also reminds me of my mom, so it’s very dear to me.
