The Beat Dies
The Raveonettes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Adored your picture a thousand times
You still think I was out of line
The meanest thing that I ever did
Was asking you for another hit

The first love you can't escape
The second love feels like rape
A giggly smile night-pale face
I hear you whispering hope he stays

The beat dies silence
Stay here with me
White deathly face
I'm in love

They file out to lovers sad
We walk from bar to bar mad
The first kiss don't think thereof
The second kiss and you're in love

Overall Meaning

"The Beat Dies" by The Raveonettes is a song that captures the themes of love and loss, addiction, and emotional pain. The lyrics showcase the narrative of a man who is struggling with his addiction and trying to make amends for his past mistakes. He is still in love with his ex-lover and desires to have her back in his life.

The opening lyrics, "Adored your picture a thousand times, you still think I was out of line," suggest that the man has tried to reconcile with his ex-partner, but she refuses to forgive him. He recognizes that the meanest thing he ever did was asking her for another hit, indicating that drug addiction was a factor in their breakup. The lyrics lament that he cannot escape his first love, and the second love feels like rape, emphasizing that the pain of lost love can be overwhelming.

The chorus, "The beat dies silence, stay here with me, white deathly face, I'm in love," speaks to the man's emotional pain, referencing the sensation of one's heart sinking when love is lost. He longs for his former partner to return to him, but in reality, nothing he can do will bring her back.

The final verse, "They file out to lovers sad, we walk from bar to bar mad, the first kiss don't think thereof, the second kiss and you're in love," suggests that the man is unable to move on from his past relationship. With each new partner, the first kiss does not hold the same weight as it once did, but the second kiss can ignite a new love, rekindling the hope for happiness.

Really this song almost broke them. It is such a great tune. I wonder how that happened.

In an interview, they discussed LUST LUST LUST & when they came across "The Beat Dies", Sharin explained how they almost broke up just because of the lyrics. I believe they argued about the part, "I hear you whispering hope he stays". Sharin said that it made more sense to say "hope she stays", and Sune thought otherwise. They jokingly said that sometimes they can be so stubborn. Sorry the reply is so long, by the way. Keep on raving! :)

The intro of this song sounds similar to the intro song of the TV show, Twin Peaks. Nonetheless, it is a good song!
