Gorillaz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The world is spinning too fast
I'm buying lead Nike shoes
To keep myself tethered
To the days I've tried to lose
My mama said to slow down
You must make your own shoes
Stop dancing to the music
Of Gorillaz in a happy mood
Keeping my groove on

They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump

They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump

Here you go, get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine

There's a monkey in the jungle
Watching a vapor trail
Caught up in the conflict
Between his brain and his tail
And if time's elimination
Then we got nothing to lose
Please repeat the message
It's the music that we choose
Keeping my groove on

They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump

They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump (la-la, la-la)
They do the bump

Okay, bring it down here
We'll come back out

Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine
Get the cool
Get the cool shoeshine

They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump
They do the bump

Overall Meaning

The song 19-2000 by Gorillaz is an upbeat and danceable tune with lyrics that touch on themes of stress and the pressure to keep up with the fast-paced world. The opening lines, "The world is spinning too fast, I'm buying lead Nike shoes, to keep myself tethered to the days I've tried to lose," suggest the singer is desperately trying to keep up with the ever-accelerating world by buying expensive shoes made of lead, symbolizing a desire to slow down and take control.

However, the singer's mother advises them to "make their own shoes" and not rely on consumerism to solve their problems. Yet, despite this advice, the singer can't stop "dancing to the music of Gorillaz in a happy mood," indicating the power that music can have in helping someone escape their troubles and find joy.

In the second verse, the lyrics shift to a monkey in the jungle who is caught up in a conflict between its brain and its tail, symbolizing the tug of war between logic and instinct. The idea that "if time's elimination, then we got nothing to lose" suggests that in the face of the inevitable passage of time, everything becomes meaningless except for the enjoyment we get from music and other forms of entertainment. Overall, the song seems to be a fun and lighthearted celebration of the joy and escapism that music can provide.

When I was a kid, I've always wanted to know what's she's really saying in 1:28.
Now after studying japanese I can understand and share to others.

Text:
かっこいい靴磨き欲しい

か = ka
っ = lowercase "tsu" which is used to "double the first letter of the next character"
こ = usually "ko" but because of the lowercase "tsu", it's "kko"
い = i

かっこいい = kakkoii which means literally "cool".

靴 = kutsu. It means literally "shoe" or "shoes".

磨 = miga
き = ki

磨き= migaki. Means "polish" specifically as in a polishing product.

欲 = ho
し = shi
い = i

欲しい = hoshii. Means "wanting" or can be abbreviated for "I want" as japanese will rarely bother to do proper noun conjugation of "Watashi hoshii" or something similar.

FINALLY:
かっこいい靴磨き欲しい
kakkoii kutsu migaki hoshii.

She's saying "I WANT (the) COOL SHOE POLISH".

Hope you're as happy as I am to finally understand it in the most pedantic way possible.
