Blue Moon
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm so tired of being alone
These penitent walls are all I've known
Songbird calling across the water
Inside my silent asylum

Oh don't leave me on my own
Left me standing all alone
Cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies that will divide us both in time

See the turncoat on his knees
A vagabond that no one sees
When a moon is throwing shadows
You can't save the ones you've caught in battle

Oh don't leave me on my own
Left me standing all alone
Cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies you try to hide behind your eyes

Don't leave me on my own
Don't leave me on my own
So cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies that will divide us both in time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Beck's song Blue Moon center around a sense of isolation, desperation, and a plea to not be left alone. The first verse begins with the line, "I'm so tired of being alone," setting the tone for the rest of the song. The singer expresses a feeling of being trapped within "penitent walls," suggesting a sense of imprisonment both physically and mentally. The line, "Songbird calling across the water," could be seen as a metaphor for a glimmer of hope or freedom that seems just out of reach. However, the singer quickly brings the listener back to reality with the powerful image of an "inside my silent asylum."

In the second verse, the singer emphasizes his desperation with lines like "Oh don't leave me on my own" repeated twice. He accuses someone of cutting him down to size and hiding lies behind their eyes. The line "see the turncoat on his knees," could imply someone begging for forgiveness, but ultimately still being abandoned. The final lines of the song, "So cut me down to size so I can fit inside/Lies that will divide us both in time," seem to suggest that the singer is willing to conform or be controlled, as long as he isn't left alone.

Thank you for this song Beck. I just got my own apartment after being homeless for years. I would listen to this song when I was homeless and hope for a better life. I didn't have a guitar or anything, just my voice to sing along. It helped me have hope.
