Goodbye Mr. Blue
Father John Misty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Last time I put on my shoes, mmh
Go down to the corner
And buy the damn cat the expensive food
That Turkish Angora's 'bout the only thing left of me and you, mmh
Early this morning, it started making sounds that say
"Don't the last time come too soon?
One down, eight to go, but it's no less true
Don't the last time come too soon?"
Mmh-hmm-mmm
Mmh-hmm-mmm
Mmh-hmm
This may be the last time
Last time I get out of bed, mhm
Put coffee on and try, in your words
"To show some initiative"
We used to lay around here laughing
At what these freaks out there were trying to prove, mhm
But what's wasting time if not throwing it away on work
When the last time comes so soon?
Mr. Blue died in my arms, nothing they could do
Don't the last time come too soon?
Love's always gonna leave ya
No matter what they say
You only know what it is once it's gone away
This may be the last time
The last time I lay here with you, mmh
Do you swear it's not the cat?
You don't have to answer that
I'll just make do
But maybe if he'd gone sooner
Could've brought us back together last June, mmh
When the last time was our last time
If only then I knew
The last time was our last time
Would've told you that the last time comes too soon
When the last time was our last time
Should've told you that the last time comes too soon
Oh
Ah
"Goodbye Mr. Blue" by Father John Misty expresses a sense of finality and impending loss. The lyrics suggest that this may be the last time the singer engages in mundane activities like putting on shoes, buying expensive food for the cat, or getting out of bed. The mention of the Turkish Angora cat symbolizes one of the few remaining connections between the singer and someone else. The cat's presence reminds the singer of the inevitable passage of time and the transience of relationships. The line "Don't the last time come too soon?" conveys the bittersweet realization that any moment, whether mundane or significant, can be the last. It's a poignant reflection on the fleeting nature of life and the missed opportunities to express love or make amends.
The song also touches on the theme of love and its inevitable departure. The line "Love's always gonna leave ya, no matter what they say" suggests that love is transient and ultimately leaves a void. The singer implies that only after love is gone can one truly understand its value and significance. There is a sense of longing and regret in the song as the singer realizes that the last time shared with a loved one has gone unnoticed until it's too late.
Overall, "Goodbye Mr. Blue" captures a melancholic, introspective mood, exploring the fleeting nature of time, the loss of love, and the missed opportunities for connection and understanding.

Yea it's gonna take more than a moment and a song, don't fool yourself - life ain't easy brother.
I'm going kind of through the opposite. I left my girlfriend, the first person to ever show me love in my life - because I wasn't in love with her. She would have stuck by me through anything, but I didn't love her, and couldn't live my life being dishonest for the sake of comfort.
I've had such a hard life, and the cruelest thing is I thought if I could've loved her things would've been better, but I couldn't - I feel so frustrated.
My point is two ways here:
1. Don't fool yourself into thinking it's gonna be a week and you're over it. We don't live as long as people make out we do, things hurt and take time to recover from.
2. The thing that makes point 1. better? We're all suffering, take solace and feel the arms of many who empathise wrapped around you as you sit alone listening to music in your room.
Stay strong brother, the struggles ain't over till we stop breathin'. But step-by-step, we make life a little more worth livin'.
Respect and love from the UK.

Pioteko some would call it folk, some would say it's country. All I know is that it is plain, beautiful and soothing music. On top of that, it is a heartfelt tribute to the music of Fred Neil and Harry Nilsson
