Coxcomb Red
Songs: Ohia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And I wanted that heat so bad
I could taste the fire on your breath
And I wanted in your storm so bad
I could taste the lightning on your breath

I watched you hold the son in your arms while he bled to death
He grew so pale next to you
The world is so pale next to you
Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black
Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black

You said every road is a good road
Between the next road and your last road
Every love is your best love and every love is your last love
And every kiss is a goodbye
And every kiss is a goodbye

I watched you hold the son in your arms while he bled to death
He grew so pale next to you
The world is so pale next to you
Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black
Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black
Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black

Overall Meaning

The song "Coxcomb Red" by Songs: Ohia tells the story of an intense desire to be with someone who is dangerous and unpredictable. The singer is drawn to this person because of their fiery energy and chaotic nature, even though it ultimately leads to tragedy. The first verse describes the desire to be close to someone who exudes heat and power, represented by the taste of fire and lightning on their breath. The second verse references a child who is dying in the arms of this person, who is described as having coxcomb red hair and viper black eyes. Despite the sadness of this scene, the singer is still drawn to the person, unable to resist the pull of their energy.

The third verse contains some wisdom that the person imparts to the singer - every road and every love is worth pursuing, even if it ends in heartbreak. But every kiss is also a goodbye, suggesting that nothing can last forever. The repeated line of "Your hair is coxcomb red your eyes are viper black" emphasizes the power and danger of the person, but also their alluring nature. The color red suggests passion and heat, while the viper is a symbol of danger and unpredictability.

Overall, "Coxcomb Red" is a hauntingly beautiful song that tells a story of desire and tragedy. The lyrics are poetic and evocative, painting a vivid picture of a person who is both thrilling and dangerous.

The man who showed me Jason Molina and who loved his music was similarly troubled and passed away at 40 only two years after Jason in similarly tragic circumstances

I don't care about FTWD but I'm glad the show introduced more people to an incredible artist. I wish he was still with us...
