Satellite
The Kills Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lost her behind the moon
Operator, operator, dial her back
Operator put me through
Uh huh, satellite gave up the ghost too soon
Rising on the thermals
She's all in and out the blue
Uh huh, carried her off on a silver spoon
I loved her too long, don't take her too
Ooh ooh
Oh how he crossed us on that fate your path in my own satellite
What a mess a little time makes to us when time and place collide
Operator, operator, dial her back
Operator, operator, don't take her too.
I loved her too her long, don't love her too
Operator, operator, dial her back
Operator, operator, don't take her too
I love her too her long, don't love her too, don't love her too
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
The Kills’ song “Satellite” is a poignant ballad about the feeling of loss and longing for a loved one who is no longer with them. The lyrics describe the singer’s attempts to connect with their lost love, first through the metaphor of a satellite that has given up the ghost, and then through the image of the lost love rising on thermals, disappearing into the blue sky. The singer is helpless in their attempts to reconnect, as they call out to the operator to “dial her back” and “put me through” but to no avail. The lyrics are filled with regret as the singer realizes that they loved their lost love too long, and a sense of resignation and finality as they plead with the operator not to take her away.
The song seems to be about the feeling of hopelessness that comes with trying to reconnect with someone who is gone, as though the person has been carried away on a “silver spoon” and is now out of reach, leaving the singer alone and adrift. The singer’s attempts to connect with their lost love are metaphoric, almost desperate pleas for a return to what once was, but they are doomed to fail. The song captures the feeling of loss and the sense of powerlessness that often comes with it, as though the singer is completely alone in the world, unable to reach the one person who truly matters.

Hi! Idk if you have music knowledge but your comment makes me think maybe you do. Do you know where the hook is in this song? I love the kills, this is one of my favorite songs by them and I’m trying to learn more about songwriting and right now I’m just trying to pin point the hook in this song lol. I’ve tried google with no luck so if you have any insight I would really appreciate it!

@mi.randers the song repeat itself all the time so I believe the hook is when the melody changes a bit probably the "oh oh oh oh ohhh" part ? 🤣 Don't really know tho

I remember in an interview, Alison said that she wasn't very good and singing and Jamie wasn't very good at playing. That their music was really about the energy between them. I think the magic in this video displays exactly that. New Kills album? My life is complete.
@harrambou9468
