Money Don't Matter 2 Night
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Unlucky for him again
He never had respect for money it's true
That's why he never wins
That's why he never ever has enough
To treat his lady right
He just pushes her away in a huff
And says 'Money don't matter to night'
Money don't matter to night
It sure didn't matter yesterday
Just when you think you've got more than enough
That's when it all up and flies away
That's when you find out that you're better off
Makin' sure your soul's alright
'Cause money didn't matter yesterday,
And it sure don't matter to night
Look, here's a cool investment
They're tellin' him he just can't lose
So he goes off and tries to find a partner
But all he finds are users (users)
All he finds are snakes in ever color
Every nationality and size
Seems like the only thing he can do
Is just roll his eyes, and say that
Money don't matter to night (don't matter)
It sure didn't matter yesterday
Just when you think you've got more than enough
That's when it all up and flies away
That's when you find out that you're better off
Makin' sure your soul's alright (soul's alright)
'Cause money didn't matter yesterday, (don't matter)
And it sure don't matter to night
(ooh-wee-ooh, don't matter)
(it don't matter to night, no)
Hey now, maybe we can find a good reason
To send a child off to war
So what if we're controllin' all the oil,
Is it worth a child dying for? (is it worth it?)
If long life is what we all live for
Then long life will come to pass
Anything is better than the picture of the child
In a cloud of gas
And you think you got it bad
Money don't matter to night (no, don't matter)
It sure didn't matter yesterday (yesterday)
Just when you think you've got more than enough
That's when it all up and flies away (flies away, flies away)
That's when you find out that you're better off
Makin' sure your soul's alright (make certain that your soul's alright)
'Cause money didn't matter yesterday,
It sure don't matter to night
Money don't matter to night
It sure didn't matter yesterday (yesterday, yesterday)
Just when you think you've got more than enough
That's when it all up and flies away (flies away, flies away)
That's when you find out that you're better off
Makin' sure your soul's alright
Money didn't matter yesterday,
And it sure don't matter to night
Prince & The New Power Generation's song Money Don't Matter 2 Night is a commentary on the true value of money, suggesting that despite the weight and importance we place on money, it ultimately lacks the power to solve all our problems. The song outlines the example of a man who gambling is his downfall. Despite playing his last card and losing, he still cannot recognise the importance of money. Nor can he provide for his loved ones, causing him to push away his loved ones. He resorts to saying "Money don't matter to night" as a way of easing his guilt, suggesting that he is willing to forsake money and care about love.
The song takes on a more powerful tone when it suggests that money is often used to justify war and violence. It asks whether it is worth sending a child off to war for the sake of controlling oil or whether we should focus on long life for ourselves and our loved ones. It also points out the hypocrisy of a society that claims to value life while simultaneously allowing children to be killed in gas clouds. The song, therefore, suggests that we ought to focus on our values and priorities, such as love and family, rather than being led astray by the pursuit of money.
Overall, Money Don't Matter 2 Night is a potent commentary on society's relationship with money, encouraging listeners to consider the larger picture and focus on what is truly important. By doing so, it suggests that we can lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives.

Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Weller: all three geniuses.
As well as writing some of the most insightful and relevant lyrics of all time, all three could also walk into a recording studio, play all the basic instruments to record the tune, then even go off and produce it, too.
Artists like that, who understand their music and message completely, come along rarely, and never seem to live long enough to share the bounty of joy they have inside them (Weller the exception that proves the rule).
Prince especially was a very misunderstood person. Hendrix was and Weller is, too.
I just feel sorry for those who don't 'get' what these artists are about: the masses are too quick to judge based on look or stereotype alone, thus isolating themselves from some of the best music ever made.
More reason for those who do appreciate it to go into ::smug mode::

This song reminds me when my son and I took a drive to Atlantic city, he was having some problems and so I.
However, listening to Prince everytime I hear this song, just brings tears to my eyes.
I love Prince, but I love my son more.
I'm so glad my children, well they're grown now, but they love Prince. They like they're own taste of music, but I'd have to say, they really love Prince.
Anyone with a connection to his music, understands.
Sorry for the run off, apologies.
Grandkids coming today, what a fun day is going to be.
Enjoy life everyone, just try and Forgive, and Forget and
Loveoneanother.
