I first heard this song 50 years ago but I had forgotten all about it until I saw Darjeeling Limited this week and rediscovered it. An amazing elegy of grief, mortality, wisdom, longing, love and transcendence but without ever being pretentious. It is easy to get obsessed with this song, as many of you have discovered. Truly a masterpiece. Davies wrote it after the death of a schoolmate to overdose, or so he said.

My Dad was a real music lover, the kinks were one of the bands he educated me on, i could always see how happy it made him when i was really into a song that he liked, i would report back to him whenever i found a track from the 60/70s that I connected with, he passed away last year and as soon as i heard this song i wished i could listen to it with him and tell him its now one of my favourite songs of all time, id really like to know if he knew the song and if he liked it.

In America, they have been limited us to what they call a "cult following", I think it was after Ray punched that Union dude out cold. and the kinks got banded in the US for a while. Well they didn't tour in the US but all there albums were in the charts there. Unlike the UK, 1968 onwards they didn't even place. I think Rays reluctance to write hits lost them the popularity they could of gone on to have. But I guess that's what makes them so good!

This is how Dave Davies described the song in an interview:

DD: Oh thank you, I love that song. The background is that Hank Williams had a great sense a humor. It was a bit morose. I always remember one of his songs, he sang a line [singing] “I’ll never get out of this world alive” [sings]. It was a great Hank Williams tune. Not that you should know, it’s an old great Hank Williams tune. Sorry that wasn’t that great of singing. I hope it improves before my next gig [laughs].

DD: Well that line was always stuck in my head. That’s how I came out with one of the first lines I strummed out in Strangers, "If I live too long, I’m afraid I’ll die." It was kind of inspired from that funny line in the Hank Williams song. Then I started to write about and old friend of mine at school named George Harris. We were dear friends. Actually, George and I were going to start a band, but he got too heavily into drugs and it kind of pulled us apart. The drug thing was like a three-way affair. He died of a methamphetamine overdose. They found him departed…he was young. I always felt it was going to be me and him. I didn’t think at that age that it was going to be me and Ray. So I really kind of wrote it to him; “Strangers on this road we are on, we are not two we are one“. It was like, what might of been if he hadn’t died so tragically.

Yeah I kind of just assumed that the kinks were just another boy band. Boy was I wrong. After the Darjeeling limited, the kinks have become my favourite band. I recommend you check out the song shangri la. Cheers!
