Barroom Hero
Dropkick Murphys Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He's a big, strong man with a childs mind,
Don't you take his booze away!
He's been at it for years drinking balls and beer he's a hero to most he meets,
But inside he cries black swollen eyes,
This man he sheds no tears!
Now his wife & kids sing a different tune as they worry about their daddy dying,
But this arrogant fool breaks every rule it'll be nothing but pride that kills him.
Could he listen no he won't that's all she wrote he'll be dead before the daylight shines,
But the thoughts and prayers of a million strong might keep this fool from dying.
Could he listen no he won't that's all she wrote he'll be dead before the daylight shines,
But the thoughts and prayers of a million strong might keep this fool from dying.
He's a legend in the bar with every scar fights a thousand bigger men,
But now he fights and looses got all the bruises will someone please step in?
Cause this Irish fools got a great big heart he keeps climbing back in to the ring
In the low down circles where he holds his court this man he once was king.
Could he listen no he won't that's all she wrote he'll be dead before the daylight shines,
But the thoughts and prayers of a million strong might keep this fool from dying.
Could he listen no he won't that's all she wrote he'll be dead before the daylight shines,
But the thoughts and prayers of a million strong might keep this fool from dying
The song "Barroom Hero" by Dropkick Murphys tells the story of a man who spends most of his time in a bar, drinking and fighting. Despite his rough exterior, he is described as having a child's mind and shedding no tears, even though he has black swollen eyes. He has been drinking for years and is considered a hero by those he meets in the bar. However, his family is worried about him and sings a different tune. They fear he will die from his drinking and fighting, but he is too proud to listen to their concerns. The song ends with the hope that the thoughts and prayers of a million people might keep him from dying.
The lyrics of this song highlight the negative effects of excessive drinking and the toll it can take on an individual's life. The barroom hero is an example of someone who has become too deeply entrenched in the culture of drinking and fighting to see the damage it is causing him. His refusal to listen to the concerns of his family shows the power that addiction can have over a person's decisions and actions.

A friend from high school snuck me into the show they filmed this at. I was 15/16 years old. One of my favorite days ever.

@darkmoon_king
All these people talking shit like anyone in the band is going to give a fuck.
These guys have been at this for 20 years. They're not hard-headed street punks anymore. Most of them have families and are nearing middle age.
To me, the progression of their music from tough oi/street punk to a more folk-driven sound is from their own growth and changes in life. Music is a living, breathing thing and it evolves like anything else that's alive. The dedication that these guys have put into their music deserves nothing but respect, because despite people who want to keep them in a small niche of music, they've allowed themselves to expand and grow.
Cheers to Dropkick. Looking forward to more from them.
