Good Vibrations
The Beach Boys Lyrics

I-I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair
I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air

I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me the excitations (oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations (good vibrations, oom bop bop)
She's giving me the excitations (excitations, oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations (oom bop bop)
She's giving me the excitations (excitations, oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations (oom bop bop)
She's giving me the excitations (excitations)

Close my eyes, she's somehow closer now
Softly smile, I know she must be kind
When I look in her eyes
She goes with me to a blossom world

I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations (oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations (good vibrations, oom bop bop)
She's giving me excitations (excitations, oom bop bop)
Good, good, good, good vibrations (oom bop bop)
She's giving me excitations (excitations, oom bop bop)
Good, good, good, good vibrations (oom bop bop)
She's giving me excitations (excitations)

Ah, ah, my my, what elation
I don't know where but she sends me there
Oh, my my, what a sensation
Oh, my my, what elation
Oh, my my, what

Gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with her
Gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with her
Gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin'

(Ahh)

Good, good, good, good vibrations (oom bop bop)
She's giving me the excitations (excitations, oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations

Na na na na na, na na na
Na na na na na, na na na (bop bop-bop-bop-bop, bop)
Do do do do do, do do do (bop bop-bop-bop-bop, bop)
Do do do do do, do do do (bop bop-bop-bop-bop, bop)

Can't say that being born in 84 and having Trent Reznor and Prince as my favourite artists lends one to normally examine the Beach Boys. But one time in 2002 I think I got a Mojo magazine about lost albums. Mainly because it had Richey Edwards on the cover and I LOVED that guy... Anyway it had a really sprawling and engrossing article about Smile on it. Brian making musicians eat vegetables recording said song, his empty swimming pool and his relationship with Van Dyke Parks. It always stayed with me and i remember the various official releases of Smile and almost lamenting the age of bootleg was over. Now I had a layman's knowledge of TBB, the hits and stuff that's broken into pop culture.
I recently sat down to listen to some stuff like Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile, and of course the various versions of Smile.
This song BLOWS MY MIND.
To have a startlingly unique suite in 3.35 is unreal. The way the sections should not work, lest of all from the time changes, the way they seague. The melodies, that bass...when you really listen to this it almost is like synesthesia... You see sounds and hear colours.
Donnt get me wrong, Trent is a genius in my book too, not just his Nine Inch Nails work but his soundtrack recently he won an Oscar for, Soul... That dreamy, ambient, emotion evoking soundcsape he created is as brilliant as his nerve shredding tension inducing vistas on Gone Girl, and Prince...well that says it all.
But the very Brian Wilson centric Beach Boys output definitely captures a particularly vivid sensation of being in a particular time and place in the universe.
Maybe Hunter Thompson was wrong in his 'wave speech' because there are sights and smells and emotions all conjured up by Wilson and it feels like California in the 1960s.
Magic stuff.
Music is definitely the closest thing we have to time travel. I am sure many people who were around then and heard this when it was first released can be taken back there with this music.
