Ladies
Fiona Apple Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies

Ruminations on the looming effect
And the parallax view, and the figure
And the form, and the revolving door that keeps
Turning out more and more
Good women like you
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through

Ruminations on the looming effect
And the parallax view, and the figure
And the form, and the revolving door that keeps
Turning out more and more
Good women like you
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Take it easy, when he leaves me, please be my guest
To whatever I might've left
In his kitchen cupboards, in the back of his bathroom cabinets
And oh yes, oh yes, oh yes
There's a dress in the closet, don't get rid of it, you'd look good in it
I didn't fit in it, it was never mine
It belonged to the ex wife of another ex of mine
She left it behind, with a note
One line it said, "I don't know if I'm coming across, but I'm really trying"
She was very kind

Fruit bat
Cuter than a button, mutton-head maniac
Fruit bat, cuter than a button, mutton-head maniac

Nobody can replace anybody else
So, it would be a shame to make it a competition
And no love is like any other love
So, it would be insane to make a comparison with you

Ruminations on the looming effect
And the parallax view, and the figure
And the form, and the revolving door that keeps
Turning out more and more
Good women like you
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through

Cuter than a button, mutton-head maniac

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies

No love is like any other love
So, it would be insane to make a comparison with you

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies
Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies

Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through
Yet another woman, to whom I won't get through

Overall Meaning

The song "Ladies" by Fiona Apple appears to be a reflection on the female experience, specifically in terms of relationships with men. The lyrics repeat the phrase "ladies, ladies, ladies" throughout, as if to create a sense of unity among women. However, the rest of the lyrics seem to convey a sense of frustration and disappointment with men, as well as a sense of camaraderie with other women who have gone through similar experiences.

The verses center around the idea of a "looming effect" and a "revolving door" that keeps turning out "good women" who can't seem to make a lasting impact on the men in their lives. The singer acknowledges that she herself is just "yet another woman, to whom I won't get through." The chorus offers a sense of solidarity, suggesting that no love is like any other love, and that it would be "insane to make a comparison" with other women.

The final verse offers a bit of levity as the singer seemingly offers up some items to other women who may come into contact with the man in question. She mentions leaving things in his kitchen cupboards and bathroom cabinets, including a dress that belonged to the ex-wife of another ex of hers. The ex-wife left a note with the dress that said, "I don't know if I'm coming across, but I'm really trying." This perhaps serves as a reminder that even though there may be a sense of competition or comparison among women, there is also a sense of shared experience and understanding.

This song has meaning to me because I married a man whose first wife passed away from cancer. I've always felt a connection with her even though I didn't know her and I've always known I'm not in competition with her. I don't have to prove myself or try to find any flaws she may have had. We are different and our love for the same man is different. There's always a sense that there are traces of her in our relationship. We even still have some of her household items... a reminder that I am with her husband and children and I have a unique bond with her.

this is so wholesome

@silverbat5873

This is so beautiful and I think the way you feel and see these energies in your relationship and family shows so much love for your man, and his past, present and future and yours. By loving her, you love him more and heal his pain. You are amazing and inspiring.
