Flight 505
The Rolling Stones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I was happy here at home
I got everything I need
Happy bein' on my own
Just living the life I lead

Well, suddenly it dawned on me
That this was not my life
So I just phoned the airline girl
And said, "Get me on flight number 505
Get me on flight number 505"

Well, I confirmed my reservation
Then I hopped a cab
No idea of my destination
And feeling pretty bad

With my suitcase in my hand
In my head, my new life
So then I told the airline girl
"Well, get me on flight number 505
Get me on flight number 505"
Alright

Well, I sat right there in my seat
Well, feeling like a king
With the whole world right at my feet
"Of course I'll have a drink"

Well, suddenly I saw
That we never ever would arrive
He put the plane down in the sea
The end of flight number 505
The end of flight number 505
Alright

Whew, they put the plane down in the sea
The end of flight number 505
The end of flight number 505

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' "Flight 505" is a song about a man who suddenly realizes he's unhappy with his life, and decides to take a chance by getting on a plane to an unknown destination. The song's opening lines establish that the singer was formerly content in his life at home, living independently and not needing anyone else to be happy. However, something causes him to reassess his life, and he calls an airline to book a flight (number 505) to an unknown destination, seeking adventure and new experiences.

The lyrics illustrate the singer's uncertainty and unease as he sets off on this new journey. He has no idea where he's going or what he'll find when he gets there. He feels anxious and unsure in the cab to the airport, and even as he sits in his airplane seat feeling like a king, he can't shake the feeling that this new life may not be what he hoped for. The song's final lines reveal that his journey ultimately ends in disaster, with the plane crashing into the sea and the singer's fate left unclear.

Overall, "Flight 505" speaks to the human desire for adventure and exploration, but also underscores the risks and uncertainty inherent in venturing into the unknown.

The Stones proved that even early on in their career that they could weave together similarly clever and imaginative lyrics in their own songs just as their idol Chuck Berry did in his. And this song is definitely influenced by Berry both musically and lyrically.

All of the music by the Rolling Stones have a catchy intro to them and they always follow through into a great song. Ian Stuarts piano starts off booging to an eerie burlesque western saloon thing and then the song jumps out at you along with Bill Wyman's bass grunting out notes throughout the enter tune.
