Why? Because the bassist is smoking like locomotive?
@VirginiaMq220
@darookmezd Why what? Be civil & speak or express yourself clearly. The silent nodding of heads as one is agreeing your comment is in reference to polluted air by smoking or an unknown party is exhaling hot air with no bearing on the music.

IYou're right Chris, it's magic. From the moment it starts with Jet Harris smoking... Nobody ever played guitar like Hank Marvin. Truly a legend.

I was so stunned by "Apache" when I first heard it in Poland I have never forgotten it. But I was also curious why Jerry Lordan (who wrote this melody) chose to call it "Apache." So when I eventually came to New Mexico, I decided to study 19th-century Apache Indians. Now I know why Apache Indians could have inspired such a magical, immortal instrumental. That its release coincided with the rise of the Shadows and the new Fender guitar is beyond magic.
@picdubois4620
I am introduced to this song by Link Wray, live at the Pier Club in Ocean City, Md. in the 50's. Later I met Link and his brother in a small bar by the bus stop in Washington DC. Hired the band then and there to play at a "mixer" at a Delta Sigma Pi party at Georgetown. I was thrown out of the pier club in my earlier days for "dancing dirty" , but I think that song was Jack the Ripper. Tell me about Jerry Lordan.

@RastaSaiyaman
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Brian May and Tony Iommi, each and every single one of them changed people's perspective of what an electric guitar could do. But I think that Hank Marvin should be in that list as well, he's the OG BAD ASS!
@eurogael
Agreed he is one of the best guitarists the UK ever produced
@AwardSession
@Mick Murray Agreed. Instrumentals are difficult because you can't 'fluff' over any mistakes. With the guitar echo units, those mistakes repeat themselves too! Hank RARELY makes any mistakes. Self discipline at the highest level! Unlike blues/rock music, you can't adlib anything... it has to be right! :)
@johngibson9463
Apache was released by the Shadows in July 61. Hank and Bruce were 19 yrs old, Harris 21 and Meehan 17
@Fireglo
@AwardSession the vast majority of the Shadow's songs a beginner could learn especially this one. It's not difficult to not make mistakes on this song.
@AwardSession
@J.J. That is what I was implying. Simple tune... but have to be played without mistakes. Hank rarely makes mistakes, that's where a significant amount of his ability lies.

I think you're morphing Hank Marvin into Brian May. I know where you're coming from.

@@joylunn3445 'Brian' was Hank's given Christian name; 'Marvin' was borrowed from Marvin Rainwater - his real surname was Rankin.

2 cool carefree blokes on guitar, a bloke on drums, a young grinning maestro by the name of hank marvin and of course a timeless tune that makes the hair on your neck stand up with it's haunting melodies. It just doesn't get any better than this, it puts today's mess to shame. God bless the golden era of real music.

Hard to believe that Hank was only 18 when he did this! The oldest of them was Jet, who had just turned 21. So much talent, and so much persistence in paying their dues to get to the top.
Sad, too, to know that Jet & Tony are both gone.

It is incredible what a little curiosity can lead to...I wanted to look up greatest guitar intros and came across Paul Davids' Top 80 Guitar Intros YT video. He played a few chords of this song, which instantly made me research The Shadows. I know realize that many other artists have sampled this great song include the well recognized covers by The Sugarhill Gang and the Incredible Bongo Band. I am just glad to know the origins and give thanks to The Shadows for leaving us this treasure.
