One of the first times I had been high, I was riding in a car with a few of my friends. One of them played this song while we were driving towards the sunset and I'll never forget how it looked. The sky was golden around the sun. The rest of the sky was a beautiful, rich pink. It was one of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen. We all stopped talking and laughing, we just watched in silence, completely mesmerized by the sky. I can't think of another moment in my life where I've experienced such a strong feeling of pleasure. I'll always remember this song and that moment.

Edit: I realized it sounds better if you focus in on the bass. Enjoy.

Also, while I'm here: My Sweet Lord when you're high is a spiritual experience and I would highly recommend it (or any George Harrison really).

I would say this is more comparable to The Seeds or other Garage Psych Bands from the time whereas what The Beatles were doing was more akin to Cream,The Who,and other mod-ey British acts.

Now that I'm getting a bit old, I have difficulty remembering what day it is. As I'm brushing my teeth & getting dressed, on Sunday I play this. For the rest of the day I'm humming it ( it's an earworm ) and I know what day it is. Monday is the Boomtown Rats or the Bangles, on Tuesday the Stones play `Ruby Tuesday`, and so on.

This entire album is such a work of art it is astounding to say the least. That jaded city vibe with that rugged addict aura. Mind you this was 1967 they made this!... NOTHING was as raw and brazen as this group putting these songs out at a time where that taboo nature and drugs were completely hush hush. These guys were pure geniuses. I am convinced they were one of the ones who started punk rock and allot of other genre’s

Got that spacy haunting pysch melody. Song is very characteristic of the 66-67 flower power hippy times.This might of been recorded early - late 66. I did hear it in spring of 67 , right before Monterey. Actually, it kind of sounds a little like the Mamas and Papas.
My friends sister , a hippy by 65-66 had this record, or album, summer of 67. 67 summer of love.
Sunday Morning was a befitting song for that time period. Heroin usage in 67 was ever imcreasing, evan amongst the hippies; it wasn't just acid, shrooms, and pot. Heroin, cocaine, and meth were making strong headway into society!
1967 things were getting interesting. It's all Vietnam era.

This is definitely one of there more relaxed songs off of with Nico. This whole album is very high strung because it's from when Warhol was actually involved in it so the high art thing is more present+some of the worst of Lou Reeds Heroin Problem. You might like Loaded better as a whole. Later albums ofc do not include Nico though although I suspect she did backing vocals on New Age (also off of Loaded). Self Titled is good too but it's less Psychedelic.

Giulia Santanchè loves Loki and Marvel Your interpretation regarding drugs is entirely subjective. The only thing one can acknowledge of the song’s content is that someone, someday, feels a subtle pain and anguish, but the entire environment just distracts him from that inner reality, and that deep pain is the result of many wasted years. So, in that sense, the song’s sort of tenderness or fondness people recall as innocent is more a narcotic. So, as he falls down in the day and in himself, in his life, don’t being able of realising his mistake, just intuiting it in an almost subterranean way, because of the pain that causes to him, the song becomes more distorted, to say it in a way, revealing the real nature of the melody, being a depressive state of mind. I like to think that the song develops along an entire day that occurs rather fast, not being him able of having a grasp of anything. The Velvet Underground —specially Lou Reed as he was the songwriter— explored the decadence in almost all their songs. For me, this song is genius.

@jack meeellleee - I was only making a simple comment about experiencing that optimism of the age believed by many young people in the USA at that time but even clearly stated in my short comment that I didn't consider that to be a true depiction of the world at that time and said: "They were, of course, wrong because the human race is deeply flawed."
So if I commented that it must have been amazing to be at the fall of the Berlin Wall and share in the excitement and optimism for the future that doesn't suggest I think everyone's life and the world was filled with candy canes and gummy bears.
I understand what you are saying but you are honestly reading far too much into my comment. I meant I'd love to experience it for a moment and was not suggesting it was an era without many problems.

@Nothing Matters My point is that the individual young person will experience the world based on the specific circumstances of that young person's life. There may be general tendencies in society in addition to a lot of distorted or exaggerated public relations and media portrayals of a time period, social trend or group of people. Many people grew up in the sixties and seventies and experienced oppression and prejudice, poverty, homophobia and a lack of understanding and support. Addiction and abusive situations were also a problem in those days. I know I am older and remember the times. The music and the hippie values were ideals that were often not lived up to. I do not look at the sixties with rose colored glasses. It was not easy back then there was violence and strife and a lot more prejudice of all kinds.

@jack meeellleee - I understand what you mean and partly agree it is up to the individual to make the most of their youth. However, you then contradict your own point by saying in the 80s young people didn't have to worry about Vietnam.
Well, it is then also true that the spirit of the time, the music and the creative feeling in the youth can make it a more inspirational time to be young.
The 1960s was a time remembered for incredible music, incredible fashions, art and sexual liberation. I picked up on the fact many young people felt they could change the world and simply said it must have been interesting to experience that.
Actually, I travelled across eastern Europe and Russia after the Berlin Wall fell, so did sort of experience that optimism for change in a different way.

That and "I am sticking with you" are the essence of the velvet. So gentle considering their reputation but all stuff from the velvet (and a lot of other bands from these days) is awesome. I regret so much this time. No comparison with now. I actually stopped following the new stuff because so few things are worth listening to.

I was 9 years old when this haunting harmonic song came out. My friends 15 year old hippy sister had this album in april 67. Great trippy tune for acid heads and dipping out smack heads! Heroin was big in psychedelia too.
Remember watching the Saint with Rodger Moore. There's an episode dealing with heroin smuggling in which the Saint breaks up. Must of came out in late 67.

The first time I heard this song it was in an old Italian advert on tv about 16 years ago. By now, every time I hear this song I always burst into tears. I don't even know why, I just can't help it.

My friends hippy sister had this album , or 45 , way back then . Sad that his brother was sent to Vietnam much later that year !

It deals with the truth of that time ehen drug use was becoming rampant. Heroin was the real reality of drugs being used by 67. It wasn't just psychedelics, but opiates were also gaining in drug use.
It's sad but beautifull tune. Just like smack! It makes a person feel heavenly until the withdrawal symptoms start; then it's hell!
