Barricade The Doors
Adair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rehearse the memories and practice all the lines.
Play it one last time and then erase the tapes.
And I wonder: could you ever feel the way you did before?
All the same skin and the same fingers are there.

And its the hardest thing to live here with your ghost.

Burn it down.
Darling its too late.
We've danced around this flame too long.
We can't be saved.

I trace your silhouette across the sky with signal flares and smoke.
Listen as the tanks roll in to wipe away the past six years.
So sound the air raid sirens, barricade the doors.
Tell me what is left when all our hope is lost.

Burn the city down.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Adair's song Barricade The Doors seem to be discussing the difficulty of letting go of someone who has left or passed away. The opening lines describe the act of remembering and trying to hold on to old memories, but eventually realizing that it's time to let go and move forward. The imagery of erasing tapes suggests a desire to start fresh and forget the past. The lyrics also raise the question of whether it's possible to feel the same way about someone after they're gone, despite the physical reminders that still exist. The chorus uses the metaphor of a flame that has been danced around for too long, indicating that the singer and the subject of the song have been holding onto something that is no longer sustainable. The line "we can't be saved" suggests that there is no going back to the way things were before.

The second verse continues the theme of letting go and moving on. The singer traces the silhouette of someone across the sky with signal flares and smoke, which could be interpreted as a symbol of tribute or farewell. The contrast between this image and the tanks rolling in to wipe away the past six years creates a sense of conflict or tension. The final lines of the song suggest that hope is lost and the only option left is to burn the city down, perhaps as a way of cleansing and starting over.

Overall, the lyrics of Barricade The Doors are poignant and powerful, exploring themes of loss and moving on. The singer struggles to let go of someone who is no longer there, but ultimately accepts that they can't go back to the way things were before. The use of metaphor and imagery adds depth and nuance to the song's emotional impact.
