Approach The Bench
The Audition Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The crimes I've committed aren't heard by any judge
And there are only two in this courtroom and I must confess.
What's done is done and I'm not the type that can't be conned into being convinced.
We both know this.

[Repeat: x2]
I should be ashamed of this, I'm not,
'Cause I have tasted grapes.
This smile, don't look.
It's my bait, my words, the hook.

These acts of immorality are the only things keeping me quiet
Why can't you just accept the fact that I'm only as loyal as my options?
I can't believe that you would ever trust me.

[Repeat: x2]
I should be ashamed of this, I'm not,
'Cause I have tasted grapes.
This smile, don't look.
It's my bait, my words, the hook.

You could call me a rolling stone
'Cause I'm always on the road
Every night I wonder if you're there alone.

[Repeat: x2]
I should be ashamed of this, I'm not,
'Cause I have tasted grapes.
This smile, don't look.
It's my bait, my words, the hook.

[Repeat: x2]
I should be ashamed of this, I'm not,
'Cause I have tasted grapes.
This smile, don't look.
It's my bait, my words, the hook.

Overall Meaning

The Audition's 'Approach the Bench' is a song that embodies a person's struggles with their own moral compass. The first line "The crimes I've committed aren't heard by any judge" suggests that the singer is engaging in immoral or even illegal activities but is unpunished by society's justice system. They acknowledge their own wrongdoings and proceed to justify themselves by stating that they are easily swayed by others' persuasion. The line "What's done is done, and I'm not the type that can't be conned into being convinced, we both know this" implies that they feel powerless to their own circumstances and easily fall into a guilty mindset.

The chorus reveals a certain arrogance and lack of remorse, "I should be ashamed of this, I'm not, 'cause I have tasted grapes". It seems as if the singer is using their vices as justification for their lack of morality. The line "This smile, don't look. It's my bait, my words, the hook" suggests that the singer uses their charm and manipulation skills as a way to exploit people and situations.

Overall, 'Approach the Bench' is a song that delves into the moral complexities of a person who knowingly commits immoral acts but struggles to come to terms with their own guilt.

MVP NCAA Baseball 06 came out when I was 8. What an amazing game for it’s time. The fact that it only had 10 songs on it meant these songs were stuck in my head all day through those years lol. Thank you for putting such great songs on the game that helped to expand my palate for good music as a young kid

This song brings back so many memories. I saw them play at a venue called Hamilton Street (it since flooded and closed :/) almost a decade ago. The crowd was SUPER small, but I was screaming every fucking word of this song. It was at this show that I purchased a shirt and had it signed by every member of the band. I unfortunately left it there though -_- anyway, sick band that I wish was still making music.
