If you like this song, its genre is “City Pop”. City Pop is a genre of music originating in the coffee bars of early 1970s Japan, and comprised of J-pop, Techno, Soul, Disco, Polynesian, Jazz Fusion, Funk and R&B. From 1976 to late 1991, City Pop was the mainstream music genre in Japan. It is basically 70s and 80s J-pop in short, and continues to influence J-pop to this day.

In 1992, the Kawaii movement altered City Pop into cutesier songs, introducing genres like Nightcore and making the sound of J-pop very anime-inspired. But since the 2010s, City Pop has made a large comeback in the Japanese mainstream, and has altered the sound of J-pop once again.

I remember listening to this at a smokey jazz bar in Tokoyo during the summer of 85. I met a girl named Kiki, she was the cutest Japanese girl I've ever met in my life. When some listeners feel “seasoned” enough to consider themselves experts on a genre of music that’s not even in their native language or cultural background, they begin to feel like they have the right to attack and make fun of others for being beginners or just liking what’s more popular. On top of this, the artists they deem as popular & of lesser quality happen to be legendary artists in their respective countries. Recently, there’s a trend of comments bashing “Plastic Love” & “Stay with Me” for being more popular than other same-genre songs and since they’re almost like synonyms for City-Pop at this point.. I agree that sticking to only listening to those songs may be limiting but let me tell you that neither of those artists are overrated nor less talented. In fact Mariya Takeuchi is considered legendary in Japan maybe not for her City-pop or 80s funk efforts but in general those artists are highly respected.. Also years ago when the YouTube algorithm began to work in favor of those two songs, more and more people were CHOOSING to listen to them. Yes, the algorithm might have helped greatly too but those songs had some sort of alluring power to make the listeners easily acknowledge and even evoke anemoia for people who didn’t even speak Japanese. To disqualify them so passionately and ridicule people who are still listening to them is not only arrogant but reductive also.. I listen to City-pop since 2016 and have discovered many still “unknown” gems over the years. But, I still don’t think most of them have the same power that Plastic Love, Stay with Me, 4:00 AM, and this song have.. Some songs happen to be much more popular & known and that doesn’t mean they are musically lacking.. I think we should even praise them for being universally comprehensible & more influential

This is my first time hearing this song and I'm absolutely blown away! The last minute of this song gave me chills. The power and passion in Ohashi-san's voice reminded me of Chaka Khan. If you listen to this song and then listen to Chak Khan's "Watcha Gonna Do For Me", you can clearly hear that Ohashi-san was inspired by it. This is a masterpiece hands down. I'm adding this album to my City Pop collection.

Recuerdo que ya en ese momento, que debe haber sido en junio-julio de 2020, la recordaba como una canción que hace tiempo no escuchaba. Fue una mañana alegre. Más tarde, si no me equivoco ese mismo día, partí a tratar de tocar los acordes en guitarra. City Pop albums in general are basically considered "lost media", sold in relatively small numbers and almost exclusively on the japanese island, now 40 years ago and with seldom reissues outside their original limited runs. YouTube was the only hope of these songs being discovered again basically.

It's funny how the English lyrics do not line up with the Japanese lyrics at all, you have to stretch words for such unnatural lengths so that everything lines up. The flow in English is also sometimes horrible, too, like here's an example: "Turning A-round, Notici-ing. Listeeen! I love you so-o-o-o." It's just kinda funny to me

@700club I lived in rural Michigan for 20 years and it was absolute hell, looking back at it. The scenery can be nice but the people have just some backwards ass views and I never seemed to truly get along with the natives there. Last year I moved out to the East Coast and I vibe with people here way more than before, I was just meant to live in a city and not in a hick village

@Bob Marley just listened to the song I'd say they used the sample but added 2 or 3 beats,and they also pitched and adjusted the length of the beat to be exact with the lyrics so yeah they can't get sued like ice Ice baby some of those beats are Similar to Freddie mercury's song but vanilla ice said it may sounds similar but it's different

I was just coming in here to comment this sounds extremely similar to What Cha Gonna Do For Me. And Japanese funk is not “better” (or worse), but it’s definitely awesome, and it definitely is heavily influenced by US/American funk, and soul.

Except it's not. I love city pop, but it's near literally American music from the 70s-80s. It's directly influenced by disco, funk, jazz, r&b and soft rock. The Japanese literally booked studio time with Americans including many black artists in order to learn the craft from the originators of the sound and draw inspiration. They cross collaborated a lot, they flying over to Japan, Americans flying out to Japan to work on new music.
