I Don't Want To Spoil The Party
Rosanne Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want to spoil the party so I'll go
I would hate my disappointment to show
There's nothing for me here, so I will disappear
If he turns up while I'm gone please let me know

I had a drink or two and I don't care
There's no fun in what I do if he's not there
I wonder what went wrong, I waited for too long
I think I'll take a walk and look for him

Though tonight he's made me sad
I still love him
If I find him I'll be glad
I still love him

I don't want to spoil the party so I'll go
I would hate my disappointment to show
There's nothing for me here so I will disappear
If he turns up while I'm gone please let me know

Though tonight he's made me sad
I still love him
If I find him I'll be glad
I still love him

I had a drink or two and I don't care
There's no fun in what I do if he's not there
I wonder what went wrong, I waited for too long
I think I'll take a walk and look for him

I think I'll take a walk and look for him
I think I'll take a walk

Overall Meaning

and look for him

In Rosanne Cash's song "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party," the singer is experiencing heartbreak after being disappointed by her love interest, resulting in her leaving the party to search for him. The lyrics convey a sense of resignation as the singer acknowledges that there's nothing left for her at the party and she must leave to escape the pain she feels. The repetition of the phrase, "There's nothing for me here, so I will disappear," emphasizes the singer's sense of disconnect from the party and her lover.

The song's chorus, "Though tonight he's made me sad, I still love him; If I find him I'll be glad, I still love him," highlights the conflicting emotions that the singer is experiencing. She's heartbroken by her lover's absence, but still holds onto her love for him. The song's overall message can be interpreted as a commentary on the difficulties of navigating romantic relationships and the emotional toll that heartbreak can have.

this song went to #1 on the country charts in 1989!!!

Thanks Rosanne for putting the Beatles on the country charts. John Lennon (R.I.P.) was the primary writer of this song and it has his trademark stamp of bittersweet longing. I like the tempo of this recording, it's a bit more upbeat than the original -- but no one else harmonizes like Lennon-McCartney, of course, and I still like their voices best on the bridge.

Hello Pamela

thunderbay63

A great and appropriate cover. I've always thought that much of the "Beatles For Sale" album (amongst their other albums) has a Country & Western feel to it.

Wow, I’m late to the party. Heard this cover for the first time today. Brilliant. Love it.

She is so great, in her own write.

Rosanne covers the Beatles! Hit #1 in Billboard, 6-24-89. God bless! Thanx for postin' it, my friend!

Roseanne Cash’s version is a pleasure to listen to. It respects the basic, wonderful feel of the original while offering a more C&W flavor.

Alfa Won

That's a really nice song and really well adapted to a country song. It was almost as it was made for it.

@duffman18 Thanks for that that was quite informative. It was 7 years ago since I wrote the original comments which is going back a bit itself!
