Schism
Tool Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lover's souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication

The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication

(Cold, cold, cold) cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion

Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers

I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit

Overall Meaning

Tool's song "Schism" tells the story of a relationship that is falling apart due to a lack of communication. The singer notes that they were once connected and the pieces fit together, but he watched as they fell away, becoming mildewed and smoldering. The fundamental differences in their approaches and intentions have created a distance that has now become too vast to overcome. The light that once fueled the fire of their relationship has burned a hole between them, causing them to be unable to see each other clearly. The singer knows that the pieces fit together because he's watched them crumble multiple times before.

He understands that there is no one to blame for the breakdown of their communication, but that doesn't mean he doesn't desire to assign blame. He knows that the blame game will only lead to further destruction, and he seeks to bring the pieces back together and rediscover communication. For him, the beauty in the dissonance that has developed is worth saving the relationship. However, he acknowledges that the silence that has developed between them could lead to atrophy of any sense of compassion they have.

The song ultimately speaks to the need for open communication and the willingness to work through differences. The singer recognizes that the pieces of the relationship once fit together, and it's possible to bring them back into alignment, but it requires growth and strengthening of their communication.

This song is about two hard headed egos who can’t grow together, until they communicate. Communication is the answer to the schism.

@Brettkev

No it’s a safety seminar on why acid is bad

@Gunth0r

It's also about the alchemical principle of the primordial androgyne, the communication between mind and matter, the recombination of opposites, the sexes. Res Bina, Rebis, Hermaphrodite. Jakin and Bohas /Jachin and Boaz/, Mercury and Sulphur. The Androgyne or Hermaphrodite, the pillars, the Res Bina, signify the prerequisite to the creation of the Great Work.

@kayyumamcaoglu8671

The video has a very alchemical and/or esoteric background to it, there was this whole text written about it, I will link to it if I find it again, but basically the woman is mind and the man is the body, they must be one in order to "square the circle". To square the circle is an idiom which originated from alchemy, it basically means to perfect something. The whole video focuses on what both mind and body do before they become one in the very end.

Edit: This is one of the best explanations btw if you are interested https://diginterpretations.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/schism-by-tool/
