Coltrane has been my musical hero since I heard his solo on ALL BLUES in 1959 - being an old man, I was fortunate to see Coltrane twice during that "Great L.A. Jazz Scene" of the early to mid 60's - OLE and OUT OF THIS WORLD are my all-time favorite Coltrane recordings - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ" (especially Coltrane)

Me too. This is the tune which introduced me to Coltrane. Thank's to my dad. I immediatly was into McCoy comping. I was 7 and had been playing the piano for 2 years. I realized then how important it is to expose young children to art. I am now in my early 50s and I've been trying to apply the same principles with my daughters. Art and culture are not elitist. They are free gifts and the foundation and cement of societies.

I heard this beautiful composition of John Coltrane's in 1968, in another country (while in high school), before I made Oregon my new home!! I fell in love with Jazz, when I was only 4 1/2 and on spring break (1st grade). After being a victim of a serious collision, I became comatose, and was taken to a hospital where my aunt was the president. She ordered her nursing staff, to play Jazz all day, in my room (from her own LP collection).. In one month I was perfect in every way, except for my newly acquired addiction to Jazz 😊 Please forgive any errors in this comment, as I did it on a Very Cheap phone, without my glasses!! Oh for those of you who may not already know, there's a very fine version of this by "Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra"!! It's also done with 2 Bass players, as part of the large personal.

Thank you, i was wondering why I never heard of George Lane. From his name alone I woulda guessed he was an extra discarded Beatle. Got to see McCoy Tyner once, and on a different occasion Elvin Jones. Elvin Jones sitting on the upright back of a toilet with one of his band members holding up a tray of coke for him to snort, this was between sets, he made a lot of nasal sounds. Beautiful man, purple black, ugly physiognomy, but beautiful, channeling the universe.
The strings on this are so far ahead of then and now, really will take you places, if you got ears you gotta listen. Olé

I was introduced to Olé a few years ago and I was entranced by it. I’ve just bought The Real McCoy, after reading some of the comments. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a biography of Coltrane, as I want to know more about the great man? Also, with all the recommendations in the comments, could someone tell me if there’s a good book about 1960’s Jazz. I’ve really do love this era of This music and want to know more. Thanks in anticipation.

On a cold rainy or snowy weekend, go to the library and loan out the 10 part DVD set of Ken Burn's JAZZ documentary. You will have a solid base to start.

I'm not a fan of Coltrane's. I find his other music annoying. Or worse: boring.
But I rate Olé among the best I've heard in my life. And I've been coming back to it for decades now.
I sense the same intensity, the same maturity, the same Weltschmerz, the same drive, the same class, really, as with Chopin's and Beethoven's and Rachmaninoff's best work.
And of course these guys were technically still miles ahead. But the clarity of mind, the composition, the relentlessness of it all. The involvement of really all the players. Tyner, Dolphy. And Coltrane himself. The haunting beauty (a lame phrase, but 100% pertinent) of the basses with the bows.
A unique masterpiece, that stands out not just among Coltrane's oeuvre, but all music.
