Smoke Signals
Phoebe Bridgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went with you up to the place you grew up
And we spent a week in the cold
Just long enough to Walden it with you
Any longer, it would've got old
Singin' "Ace of Spades" when Lemmy died
But nothing's changed, L.A.'s alright
I'm sleepin' in my bed again
And gettin' in my head and then
Walk around the reservoir

You
You must've been lookin' for me
Sendin' smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burnin' trash out on the beach

One of your eyes is always half-shut
Somethin' happened when you were a kid
I didn't know you then and I'll never understand
Why it feels like I did
"How Soon Is Now" in an eighties sedan
You slept inside of it because your dad
Lived in a campground in the back of a van
You said that song'll creep you out until you're dead

And you
Must've been lookin' for me
Sendin' smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burnin' trash out on the beach

I wanna live at the Holiday Inn
Where somebody else makes the bed
We'll watch TV while the lights on the street
Put all the stars to death
It's been on my mind since Bowie died
Just checking out to hide from life
And all of our problems, I'm gonna solve 'em
With you ridin' shotgun
Speeding 'cause fuck the cops

And you
You must've been lookin' for me
Sendin' smoke signals
Pelicans circling
Burnin' trash out on the beach

Mm-mm

I buried a hatchet, it's comin' up lavender
The future's unwritten, the past is a corridor
I'm at the exit, lookin' back through the hall
You are anonymous, I am a concrete wall

Overall Meaning

The song "Smoke Signals" by Phoebe Bridgers is a song about nostalgia and the struggle to connect with someone who is closed off emotionally. The first verse describes a trip to the singer's companion's hometown, and the ennui that came with it. Phoebe sings, "Just long enough to Walden it with you," which is a reference to Henry David Thoreau's Walden, a book about Thoreau's retreat into nature to find spiritual fulfillment. The second verse describes the singer's perception of their companion's past trauma and how it has affected their communication. The lyrics go, "One of your eyes is always half-shut/ Somethin' happened when you were a kid/ I didn't know you then and I'll never understand/ Why it feels like I did."

The chorus "You must've been lookin' for me/ Sendin' smoke signals/ Pelicans circling/ Burnin' trash out on the beach" appears throughout the song, and portrays the desperation and helplessness that the singer feels. The last verse talks about the singer's desire to leave everything behind and run away with their companion, and how they feel that they can conquer anything as long as they are together. The lyrics go, "And all of our problems, I'm gonna solve 'em/ With you ridin' shotgun/ Speeding 'cause fuck the cops."

The song is a tribute from Bridgers to Elliott Smith, who died under tragic circumstances after releasing his last album, From a Basement on a Hill. The lyrics "Ace of Spades" and "How Soon is Now" are references to Elliott Smith's love for playing cards and his influences (the Smiths). Although the song is an ode to Elliott Smith, it carries a unique perspective on the subject matter that separates it from typical nostalgia-fueled tributes to other artists.

Met a girl at a night club once
danced in a crowd of strangers like no one was watching
went home with her
told her smart speaker to play Phoebe Bridgers at 2am
heard "Smoke Signals" for the first time

slow danced with girl
kissed
she moved to Spain
Still think about her

"Now she's a little boy in Spain playing piano filled with flames" -NMH

@waitforkait

me fucking too!!! you’re not alone 😩

@retnugnahte

@@waitforkait there's something so special about them. It's honestly so weird

@kaito9907

I first listened on a car ride at night. Every time those strings happened I got mini goose bumps all over my arm and such a euphoric feeling. It was like the music rearranged the way I viewed the memories of my life in a nice pleasant order
