Past Imperfect
Lloyd Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Excuse me, could I use your pen
I have mislaid my own
Somewhere out here in space and time
Between this place and home
Maybe she lies on the subway platform
Forsaken and forlorn
All of this and more and that's not all
I can't recall

What was on my mind in Amsterdam
In 1984?
And what did I want from the pouring rain
Was it phonographic score?
And why was my head in the unmade bed
With a girl who's name I lost?
I can't unwrite the tune
Or discount the cost
I can't recall

I met a bartender at 3 of Clubs
Which is somewhere in LA
I thought, maybe, he was a friend of mine
I almost knew his face
Reluctantly impressionist
No star to chart my course
Ships pass in the night and take on board
More than I recall

Excuse me, could I use your pen
I have mislaid my own
Somewhere out here in all this space and time
Between this place and home
Maybe she lies on the check out station
Forsaken and forlorn
I've half a mind to find myself
And half...

I can't recall
Precise Coordinates
I can't recall
Entire relationships
I can't recall
The colour of her eyes
Or the feeling of her skin
Pressing against mine
I can't recall

Overall Meaning

Lloyd Cole's "Past Imperfect" is a wistful, introspective song that speaks to the frustration of memory loss. The singer begins by asking a stranger for a pen, explaining that they have lost their own somewhere "out here in space and time / between this place and home." The lyrics then wander through various memories, or rather the lack thereof, as the singer struggles to recall key moments from their past. They describe a lost love, someone whose name they cannot remember, whose features are clouded by memory loss. The singer is plagued by a sense of 'what might have been,' the missed opportunities and fleeting connections that have stayed with them over time.

The song is nostalgic and almost haunting, with an air of sadness that lingers throughout. The repetition of the phrase "I can't recall" acts as a refrain, emphasizing the sense of loss and frustration that underscores the entire song. There is a sense of yearning, of wanting to reconnect with the past and with oneself, that is both poignant and relatable.

It is unbelievable that this song has only about 8000 listeners on youtube.
Past Imperfect is my all time favourite of Lloyd Cole.
Drums, bass, guitars, the lyrics, simply wonderful. This song is PERFECT. And I believe that Lloyd himself likes this song very much, also. He starts his current acoustic tour with it.

P.S.: “Forsaken and forlorn” has become a standard saying of one of my friends and me since we first heard that song in 2000.
