Sugar
Editors Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want you to realize when I'm gone
My my, my my
You are the only thing I want to own
There's sugar on your soul
You're like no one I know
You're the life of another world
You swallow me whole
With just a mumbled hello
And it breaks my heart to love you, it breaks my heart to love you
Don't leave, don't leave
When you're lost in the moment, I am home
I tried, I tried
To make you realize when I'm gone, gone, gone
There's sugar on your soul
You're like no one I know,
You're the life of another world
You swallow me whole
With just a mumbled hello
And it breaks my heart to love you, it breaks my heart to love you
It breaks my heart to love you
There's sugar on your soul
There's sugar on your soul
There's sugar on your soul
You're like no one I know,
You're the life of another world
You swallow me whole
With just a mumbled hello
And it breaks my heart to love you, it breaks my heart to love you
Don't leave, don't leave
I want you to realize when I'm gone
The song "Sugar" by Editors is a love song that speaks of the intense longing and desire for someone who seems to have a magical hold over the singer. The opening lines "Don't leave, don't leave, I want you to realize when I'm gone" sets the tone for the entire song as the singer tries to convince their beloved that they shouldn't let them go. The phrase "My my, my my, you are the only thing I want to own" shows the depth of the singer's desire to possess the object of their affection, which reveals a certain vulnerability in the lyrics.
The chorus, which is repeated multiple times in the song, mentions "sugar on your soul", which can be interpreted as the person being irresistible, charming, and pleasant to be around. The phrase "You're like no one I know, You're the life of another world" further emphasizes this otherworldly attraction that the singer has for their beloved. The second verse talks of the power that this person has over the singer, as they are able to "swallow me whole, with just a mumbled hello". The juxtaposition of something as simple as a "mumbled hello" and the intense reaction it causes, shows the depth of the singer's feelings.
Overall, "Sugar" by Editors is a beautifully written song that captures the intense emotions felt when hopelessly in love with someone. The lyrics are both vulnerable and powerful, and the melody complements them perfectly, creating an unforgettable experience for the listener.

Lemme give you some context, Editors came along as the poster child of the greatest of the times in the 2000's on the likes of Interpol, The Strokes, The Killers, YYY's, etc.
Editors was the UK part but a sort of follower, not the sort of bands that created the movement called Revival.
If you listen to Interpol back in the 1sts aslbums you'll hears a lot os similarities and it's bc they took what they did and make it different (I woulnd't say better cause both have their charm) the thing is...
Editors always got better every album and Interpol didn't, the opposite, then by the 3rd Editors album the get their sound and from there they improve every year, and actually is one of the few bands that (ironically) survived the movement
The race started as a copy guys but they acquired their sound and made their own way, however the reason you never heard of them as you did about, like, The Strokes is because "the first to land are the first to shine" even if the band is better than the originals, being first is more important than being better
Take The Beatles from The Rolling Stones - or The Rolling Stones from Pink Floyd or Led Zepelling from Black Sabbath
