For Today I Am A Bboy
Antony and the Johnsons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day I'll grow up, I'll be a beautiful woman
One day I'll grow up, I'll be a beautiful girl
One day I'll grow up, I'll be a beautiful woman
One day I'll grow up, I'll be a beautiful girl

But for today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy

One day I'll grow up, I'll feel the power in me
One day I'll grow up, of this I'm sure
One day I'll grow up, I know a womb within me
One day I'll grow up, feel it full and pure

But for today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy

For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Antony and the Johnsons's song "For Today I Am A Bboy" allude to the fluidity of gender and the idea that at certain points in our lives, we may feel more aligned with one gender or another. The repeated refrain of "One day I'll grow up, I'll be a beautiful woman/girl" suggests that the singer or singer may eventually identify as female, but for now, they are content to exist as a child or a boy. The line "I know a womb within me, feel it full and pure" may reference the singer's own biological makeup or the idea that they carry the potential for motherhood within them, regardless of their current gender identity.

The repetition of "for today I am a child, for today I am a boy" adds weight to the idea that our gender identity can be fluid and that we should be allowed to express ourselves however we see fit, without being constrained by societal expectations or binary labels. The use of "child" as a descriptor also suggests a sense of innocence or playfulness, further emphasizing the singer's desire to exist without judgement.

Overall, "For Today I Am A Bboy" is a poignant and insightful exploration of gender identity and the societal pressures that can confine us. It offers a message of hope and encouragement to those who may be struggling to find their place in the world.

There’s a ton to unpack here.

For one thing, the narrator makes this way scarier than it would be with simple dialogue. It sounds less like he’s telling a story, and more like he’s watching Caleb during this. The shift in the narrator’s voice at the end is incredible. He sounds like he’s on the verge of tears and creates even more of the horror in the film.

Then there’s the Kipsneed(?). It looks enough like a sweet little puppet, but the fact that it’s eyes are in front of its head and the way the jaw opens is truly terrifying. I know from personal experience how terrifying anything looking at you from your window is, but this? I’d be dead on the spot.

Finally, there’s the end. Only Caleb’s feet are left, but why? Is he alive? Is the rest of him in one piece? How were they cut off? There are so many unanswered questions, and that has to be the most horrifying thing about this film. Humans want the answers, and uncertainty leads to terror. Not only this, but the photos are less like parts of the story and more like evidence that whatever happened to Caleb was not simply a kidnapping. It makes this less like a kids show and more like a unsolved case, animated to piece together the clues about what happened to Caleb.

This is easily one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen. Every part is perfection. 10/10!

I've been reading the comments, and I've gotten more shivers and a little more scared from this short movie now. so here it is all togheter (some of them)

Detail 1: The "tiny toe" logo dissapears at 5:20. It takes away that immersion in believing this is a kids show, and replaces it with a feeling of viewing a slideshow or a crimescene. Obviously, the boy is no longer safe by then. he's far past the return, and can't go back now.

Detail 2 : When the Sleepfairy came to the little boys window, and asked for the camera, 3:15 his eyes dart at the kid for a SPLIT second, which is almost unnoticable. he looks at him without saying anything apparently showing tiny hints that he has no good intentions

Detail 3 : This one had me confused, after watching it, but now it makes sense. The man is a genius. He uses a kids costume/puppet costume to show up at the kids window because kids of course if they see something friendly, or fun looking, they'll wanna talk to it right? anyway back to the story. It says that he knows the kids name and his parents and KNEW that the kids camera was broken and couldn't sleep well. Which means he was stalking the kid for some time.

Detail 5 : We see the puppet thing at the end. I'm still confused why the kid just went by it but, why it looked diffrent is because when it was in the window we were seeing it through Cailen's eyes. And then we see what it truly looked like.

Anyway, Really amazingly made. I haven't been so scared of something, but so interested in something so horror-ish in such a long time.

Absolutely amazing. Needs more views. I loved every second. I was so distracted by how cute and innocent it looked that I forgot it was a horror film. making the horror aspects that much stronger.
