Carry Around
Annuals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got magic in my head, magic up my nose
magic coming out my fingers, magic crying out my eyes
I've got magic everywhere I fucking look
I can't fight it either, I wish I could

Step foot down
Hold him to the ground
Whine though he may, you've got some bills to pay
It's all I've ever known it's everything until I say so, you say "so say so."

Okay, I've got lots of friends
In rather dry places
I've got lots of pills in my pocket
If you want some, I'd like to share
With you and everyone that you care about

But I don't know what to do for you?
Do you care
I don't know what's best for you

Sick and dying
I've been spending all my time
Sleeping of conscious debts
And licking bags clean of everything I love
And anything I can carry around
I'm a restless rat
Strun up and burnt out
Losing my fur to the wind
Catching looks from baby, white mice
Bastards in a black weeping vice

But sometimes, the sunlight
It just won't let me cry
When leaves tickle my arms I can't help but let my mouth sing
Sing out words of trust
In a language I still don't comprehend
What does meaning mend in the end?

I don't know what to do for you
I don't know what's best for you
I don't know what to do for you
I don't know what's best for you

But sometimes, the sunlight
It just won't let me cry
When leaves tickle my arms I can't help but let my mouth sing
Sing out words of trust
In a language I still don't comprehend
What does meaning mend in the end?
In the end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Carry Around" by Annuals speak of the feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to control the magic that is ever-present in the singer's life. They describe themselves as having magic everywhere, from their head to their eyes, fingers, and even their nose. Despite this, they cannot fight it, which they wish they could. The second stanza speaks of the singer's need to make a living, even if it means holding someone down. They have lots of friends but also have lots of pills that they are willing to share. However, they do not know what to do to truly help someone in need.

The third stanza describes the singer's physical and emotional state. They are sick and dying, spending their time sleeping off debts and trying to find comfort in the things they love and can carry around. They see themselves as a "restless rat," burnt out from their experiences but still trying to hold on. However, there are moments of hope where the sunlight makes them feel like singing and trusting in the world around them. Despite this, they still question the meaning of it all and what it truly accomplishes. The repetition of "I don't know what to do for you" and "I don't know what's best for you" suggests a feeling of helplessness and a lack of control over their own life and the lives of those around them.
