How Great Is Our God
Chris Tomlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the Earth rejoice
All the Earth rejoice

He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
Trembles at His voice

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end

The Godhead Three in One
Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion and the Lamb

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God

You're the name above all names
You are worthy of our praise
And my heart will sing
How great is our God

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God

The whole world sings, the whole world sings
How great is our God
How great is our God
How great, how great is our God

Overall Meaning

Chris Tomlin’s song β€œHow Great Is Our God” is an uplifting and powerful song that praises God for his greatness and majesty. The song begins by setting up a contrast between God’s splendor and majesty as a king, while calling on all the Earth to rejoice in him. The second verse highlights God’s power and might over darkness, which trembles at his voice. The chorus then invites us to join in singing praises to God and recognizing his greatness: β€œHow great is our God, sing with me / How great is our God, and all will see / How great, how great is our God.”

The third verse highlights God’s eternal nature, as he stands through the ages and holds time in his hands. The verse finishes with a nod to the Trinity – the Godhead Three in One, Father, Spirit, Son, and the Lion and the Lamb. This verse draws on biblical imagery to show the greatness and incredible power of God. The chorus repeats, calling on us to recognize and sing praises to God for his greatness.

The final verse is a personal declaration of faith, recognizing God’s worthiness of praise and our own commitment to worship him. The song ends by repeating the chorus and acknowledging that the whole world sings praises to God, recognizing his incredible greatness and majesty.

By stripes of JESUS CHRIST I decree and declare that your husband is healed in JESUS Name. Amen!
Please give him HOLY communion if he is born again if not pray on water declaring that the JESUS should turn the water TO HIS BLOOD!

I considered the question... "What is 'Pure Joy'?" and came to the conclusion it is in nature.

"Pure Joy" - For me the landscape is somewhat remote; and incredible.
Add to this an extraordinary sunset, God's miracle paint brush, colors lighting up the sky.
Then capture the 1 - 2 minutes where the Sunset and the Landscape capture you completely. That narrow peak.
Before the peak the colors are developing. After the peak you are remembering you need to get home to make dinner.
But for 1 minute, while completely captivated, that is "Pure Joy".

Add to this relationship, holding hands with the one you love. Sharing this Joy. And through this enhancing it...
You have what I would define as "Pure Joy"

I question whether this, "Pure Joy", is what the Seraphim of Isaiah chapter 6 have found.?.

In this, "Pure Joy", I find God. Or perhaps in seeking Jesus Christ, I am able to find this, "Pure Joy".

God is good, All the time... All the time, God is good.

I am here in Abuja Nigeria, lying down on my bed not sure how to keep surviving the economy with 3 kids as a lone parent. But i know God is great and faithful. We will feed today, tomorrow and in the future. School fees will be paid as well as all the enormous bills because God is great. Hallelujah!!!!

I will refer to this post years from now still affirming God's greatness and faithfulness. Thank you Jesus.

My healthy 36 year old husband was killed by hospital protocol and left me with three little kids, 3, 7, and 11. Once I found this song, it has become my anthem. I listen to it daily, all the time. It keeps me going and gives me the reminder I need. The Holy Spirit is ALL OVER this song. πŸ’–πŸ™ŒπŸ’–
