I'm sure many people discovered Gil-Scott Heron through Jamie XX, but for me it was the other way round. This remix has completely opened me up to Jamie XX's music and with that all the randomers he's sampled in his time. So strange how you can look back to one track like this as something so pivotal in shaping my music taste over the past few years!

@r Take Care - Drake & Rihanna released 2012, this was released in 2011.. Also Drake asked for this from Jamie XX which is why Jamie is listed as writer / producer. He didn’t produce this FOR Drake at all.

They say that the Drake version of this song is "better" than this, Gil Scott-Heron's. With all due respect to all, there is nothing of or about Drake this better than Gil. Nothing! Yeah, Drake's rendition is smoother (more polished) & appeals to the masses. But, note this, he used Gil's vocals to enhance his own version. Why is that? Because Gil Scott-Heron's rough gritty voice has a passion & funk to found nowhere else. No where. Rest well, Gil. My friend, my mentor, my inspiration, my brother. You are sorely missed. Here's a response I'm not quite sure any of you are ready for, it's so fucking mind blowing your heads may explode, are you ready? You don't have to compare one to the other. Both versions are good in their own ways and deserve their flowers. These "I hate crooning unless it's autotuned and sung by a multimillionaire" and "liking the 70s is my whole personality" takes don't actually need to exist, they're not even takes, just closed minded personal preferences. Just enjoy the fucking song... Or don't!

Edit: the original song was written and performed by Bobby Bland in 1959. Y'all can argue about Gil and Drake forever but if you really gave a shit you'd respect all three.

Thank you for your explanation. It has shed some light on the intended meaning of the song and the pain in his voice. I do appreciate him, but I feel that a female vocal (possibly independent of Rihanna herself) gives the lyrics and melody a softer, beautiful dimension.

I just remember dancin to the GREAT mixes in the clubs back in the day, the DJs used to mix the best parts of this song with other songs and it was awesome! Yes, Drake "Re-Made" this song, but it was done very tastefully : ) When I first heard it done by Drake it brought back many great memories.

wow, people really dont understand music. call it a sample, call it a cover. whichever, it is not 'stealing'. The Gil Scott-Heron original is a classic, true class. Jamie xx, a talented producer, made a great remix. Drake and Rihanna then covered/sampled it, and made an absolute banger. All 3 versions are quality.

This sounds like XL Studio reanimated Gil as a cyborg for one last concert on the beach but his circuits got corrupted by the salty air and he started malfunctioning so they had to get everyone in the audience to clap increasingly loud to appease their new android overlord.

I do like Drake's version but only because they took care to put in the same emotion Gil did but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a masterpiece of Gil's creation. That beat is sick af. So good Drake didn't see fit to change it, just cut it a bit and sing over it.

I understand and agree partially but I think the rough vocals with the beautiful melody adds to the song with the opposing sides of struggling for love but also being old and hurt by many other experiences. That's why I love this song GSH's lyrics and background add a unique mature twist on the classic love song.

I came across this from a dub version which Jamie XX had in his really good 2011 BBC R1 Essential Mix. I'd forgotten all about Gil Scott Heron's beautiful "Take Care" for years and years. I used to know it. And I even thought it was by Rihanna and Drake when I heard their track.

Can't believe this is a song written by Brook Benton and originally recorded by Bobby Bland in 1959. The first time I heard was Drake and Rihanna singing. In my opinion, Rihanna brought something special with her voice but my favourite version is this with Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX because they did such a great job here.

They really did not ruin it. In Drake's interview he said he looked up to Gil Scott-Heron and said he was inspired. He was just trying to show his appreciation and also modernize it a little. Also, they're version is very nice too. Even the video. Both are great.
