This movie was the only English language film playing in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1979, when I lived there. I saw it at least 10 times. My daughter was 8 years old (1992) the first time I watched this film with her. She was going to be a hippie for Halloween so I figured she should see the ultimate hippie movie. This song was where I ended the tape. I don't think she saw how this movie really ended until she was at university. I was at UCLA during the height of the Vietnam war - marched in a lot of protests and watched the fall of Saigon on TV. I did figure 8 was too young for my child to know the depths of the tragedy of war, although by that point I'd had to explain the first Gulf war to her, another tragedy played out on TV,

I was 4 when I saw this movie 😮😂. I didn't know what was going on but I loved it so much my dad got me the soundtrack on tape and I literally played it to death. The tape one day unraveled and never went back. Saddest day for me. I must've been 6 by then. Still my favorite soundtrack to this day.

Criminally underrated film. For those who don't know, the movie was filmed in the late 1970s and was released theatrically in the late '70s; the setting of the film is the late '60s in NYC. 'Hair' contains arguably the greatest movie soundtrack ever.

Just saw it a few weeks ago by checking the dvd out of the library. I thought it was okay. Don't think its all that. I was a small child when all this was going on, but, I remember thinking the sit ins, protests, the drop outs, everything hippie was silly and didn't like it, and I still don't as an adult. So, hearing that this movie was so great, I had high hopes, and I found it dated and most of the music was, at one time, shocking and new, but, now, as a society, we have become jaded towards that kind of language, so no big whoop. In mho, the movie was not all that great. Best song was "Good Morning, Sunshine".

@@ProudKansan08 if you didn't like that kind of stuff to begin with it makes sense that you didn't love this. I love history in general and this is a little piece of it. Most 70s movies look dated but I feel like this movie is like a little time capsule. Reflecting a youth that just wants to be free to express themselves and in the end conforms a bit as they grow up and live through tragedy leading us right into the conformity of the 80s. The music is still beautiful and catchy although this was my favorite soundtrack when I was little, so maybe I'm biased. I loved these songs before I had any idea what the words meant. I just loved the music.

there was so much talent in this film. From Director Milos Foreman down to the studio musicians. The parts were amazingly well casted (many of them unknowns and others cast way against type). Treat Williams' only singing role, Beverly D'angelo and John Savage at their lightest and Don Dacus (who played with Chicago and Stephen Stills) only film role. The film is almost 35 years old and certainly shows signs of it but it still is one of the compelling and joyous 2 hours you can have.

I remember being eight years old when this song was first played on the radio in 1969. I've always loved this song. Many years later in the 1990s, I recall writing down the lyrics to this song. I had to get all of the weird nonsensical words precise so that I could memorize them! I fondly recall singing this song many times to my mother in her later years while I took care of her at home after her stroke. She also enjoyed this song as well.

As I said, hippies were part of a whole generation that fought for civil rights. They specifically supported civil rights, were for racial equality and were also pacifists. In the least, we should be grateful and respectful to this generation for giving us some of our basic civil rights.

I have always loved this song since it came out. I hope I will never get too old so that I cannot enjoy this especially in the early morning. I was definitely born 10 years too late but I had a mom who loved this. She took me at Broadway to see the musical hair. I always knew I was a hippie at heart so I grew up on it too. Now as I age I've grown my hair long again and I'm going back to my hippie days and ways.

While Hamilton is technically the best ever written, lyrically and in composition. Hair, the movie, is the most moving, with the most beautiful, powerful vocals and arrangements, with wonderful performances that bring to life a bygone era. Even at the time that counterculture was about 10 years in their past. Not just my favorite musical, one of my favorite movies of all time.

That song made me cry when I first saw the movie - and didn't even know yet things would end badly.
Now, every time I hear it, it brings tears to my eyes all the more.
Their happiness is so very visible (Forman's camera and direction make this a masterpiece within the masterful whole movie... AND the new arrangments with those vocal harmonies are so beautiful)... It breaks my heart when I hear this perfect moment of friendship and playful happiness, knowing it's doomed.
I'm such a hopeless romantic..........

Casey Jason Griffin It feels good to know someone else knows the feelings I have about that song - which seems just as dear to you, judging from your previous post ;-) I actually discovered the full lyrics only a couple of weeks ago, which doesn't reflect the overwhelming impact the song has had on me for a long time. Hair as a whole is like a photographic message in a bottle from those years I didn't experience, but who speak to me as if I had been there. Not in a naive, unreal way, but rather like an incredibly strong utopia that was dreamt by a generation, however unrealistic, dilusional and doomed as it might have been from its very beginning. It was stronger than anything while it lasted (or maybe for a short time during the years when people thought it was happening...) and remains something I can turn to decades later.
I'll stop rambling now ;-)

I took my Mom to see Hair on Broadway for her birthday. You could imagine her face when she was watching. Then she turned to me in disbelief that I took her to see this. lol It was fun and for me the best musical I ever saw. And my mom had a good time. We laughed about it.

You reminded of when my Mom came home from having gone to see the stage play, probably sometime around 1975 or 1976. She had gone with a few of the other teachers from the parochial school where they taught. My Mom was very straight-laced and was shocked that there had full frontal nudity in the show, lol., but she had a smile on her face! ;-) I'll tell you, she also came home so LIGHT-HEARTED and happy. I couldn't believe it, because that just wasn't Mom. But it was great to see her like that. :-) She's 95 now. Maybe I'll send her a DVD of the movie this year for Christmas. :-D

I don't know why every time when i hear these bass lines i stay in awe..well i researched for very long time who was that bass magician and all information led to Wilbur Bascomb.. i am probably wrong when i think that i am not 100% sure.. I ve heard some of his early work and i can not make any connection with this, thinking on his style. To me Hair bass is to the best bass lines ever written..i jyst don't know..i would like if we had opportunity to see mr. Wilbur play just few riffs from one song or another just to be sure that it was really him, those years were really crazy. I saw Hair on Broadway in 1970. It was great. Frankly much better than the movie adaptation.

I always loved this song.....always makes me happy still.....and I was about age seven when the ever-popular yarn hair ties (bows) were popular as the green one in the girl's hair in the back seat....and granny glasses and granny-style dresses were "in"....I loved mine....got my first pair of "bell bottoms" on my seventh birthday when my Mom finally broke down and allowed us to wear them....Beverly D'Angelo? Well, I wanted to BE her, of course and I even had a guy in 1979 who was my perfect version of Treat Williams!!

I saw this movie soon after it came out 1970 or 71. I also like driving those roads across dry lake beds. looks the same today as 40 years ago in Mojave park and Death Valley - Califonia. long live ROCK!

I learned to sing this in 6th grade with a select group from my school. We joined with choirs from all the schools in Milwaukee and sang three songs from Hair and some other things. Indelible in my memory (and that was a long time ago!).
